President Trump for once united Washington on Wednesday in shock.
Republicans and Democrats alike were left scratching their heads after the president did a deal with Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) over the express wishes of the most senior members of his own party. Trump signed up to terms proposed by the Democrats on government funding, which would soon have run out, and the nations debt ceiling, which would soon have been hit.
Crucially, another funding measure and another hike in the debt ceiling will be required before the end of the year.
Thats a big problem for GOP leaders including Speaker Paul Ryan (Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), who wanted a longer-term deal, kicking the next likely debt-ceiling increase beyond the midterm elections in November 2018.
Why did Trump do it?
People in his orbit say that the president was demonstrating to GOP leaders that they do not have the whip hand and that, if they repeatedly fail to move his agenda, the commander in chief is willing to look elsewhere.
I think its a warning shot, said Barry Bennett, who was a senior adviser to Trumps 2016 presidential campaign. If the Republicans cant come together as a majority to do something, the president knows where to get more votes.
Beyond the ranks of Trump loyalists, however, the dominant reaction was one of perplexity. I find it very difficult to understand, said Doug Heye, a former communications director for the Republican National Committee. Clearly a long-term Republican majority and the long-term health of the Republican Party are not priorities for Donald Trump.

Of course - Until when Dec '17 rolls around. Then Trump returns to being a Nazi Sympathizer per Pelosi/Schumer and their Soros-paid agitators.
I'm sorry, but this deal stinks. I'm sure though to Conservative Treehouse this is the greatest thing since bacon was invented.
Exactly!
a 3 month deal..repeat that.. a 3 month deal
you know why the GOPe is bitching???....
because they would have given a year deal so they didn’t have it on the plate to beat them up in the elections.. by the GOP base
Have you considered that by then Ryan and McConnell may either be working with Trump or out of leadership? Trump is wisely using whatever leverage he has that may require playing interests(the good, bad and ugly) off of each other to get what is needed.
Is that too hard for you to concieve?
(Returns to drinking)
Thank you for #107!
Clearly a long-term Republican majority and the long-term health of the Republican Party

Ryan and McConnell are not the answer
Guess it goes to show Ryno and The Turtle are no different than the Schmuckster and Pelosi!
+1
I don’t like the increasing national debt regardless of which Uniparty entity grows it.
As for Trump, he is governing with the Dems just like Sarah Palin was able to govern Alaska until she became McCain’s VP candidate in 2008 making her toxic with Democrats.
By the way, MAGA was a slogan used by Bill Clinton in 1992 and Hillary Clinton in 2008. And I am 100% opposed to those two. Sorry if that offends you.
It amazes me how many people in here want to rag on Rino this, Rino that, and Paul Ryan, when the main impediment to getting anything done in Congress is McConnell and his refusal to do away with the current filibuster rule.
And this happens even though Trump has specifically called for McConnell to drop the filibuster. So, Trump is respected by nearly everyone in here, yet no one bothers to support him on getting rid of the filibuster? Weird.
All I see here is Rino, Rino, Rino...reminds me of Russia, Russia, Russia.
The filibuster is the problem. Direct the rage at McConnell where it might actually do some good.
The point is that it’s time for a correction. Ryan and Mitch need to stop with the silent coup against the most conservative pres since Reagan.
This exposes the culpability of the RINO crowd to even the Galacticly stupid.
Thanks SergeantDave...
Ryan and McConnell will either learn to play with the President, or not. Up to them.
Wall funding?
This is fine, wait until the democrats turn around when Trump wants help for his proposals and both the democrats and republicans in congress tell him to stuff it,where does he go then?
Interesting that the leader of the Republican Party, President Trump, must go to the Democrats to get any legilation through Republican held Congress. McConnell and Ryan are just lazy, inept do nothings.
Agreed.
I got flack, and still do, for saying I neither like or trust him. But it’s like having to hire someone for a job, you take what you can get. I don’t care for the ‘salesman’ “gonna be GREAT” approach and having been a somewhat poor kid in a fancy high school have no real high regard or like for most for ‘rich kids’ not any great admiration or lust for wealth.
I don’t think he’s “conservative” or “liberal” as most people who self-identify as either of those understand those things- he’s a deal maker, his ideology is “Trump” and he’s going to say and do whatever makes the deal.
As a political science geek type (pollster by training and early years’ profession) we’ve almost never seen his like and the discomfort and dislocation of friends on both the left and right is sometimes amusing in a sadistic way.
I think he understands better than most analysts that a lot of his voters are neither ‘conservative’ nor Republicans, they are simply against suicidal immigration, interventionist, and economic policies.
You've developed a fancy way of dodging questions.
