R.I.P. Walter Becker of Steely Dan 1950-2017
Steely Dan legend Walter Becker has died at the age of 67, his official website ha announced.
Becker recently missed shows with Steely Dan for the Classic East and West concerts in the USA. No details of his death have been revealed at this point.
Walter Becker founded Steely Dan with Donald Fagen in 1972. Steely Dan were an instant hit with their first album Cant Buy A Thrill in 1972. The album featured two of the bands now signature tunes Do It Again and Reeling In The Years as well as Dirty Work.
One of my favorite groups. RIP Walter
Keith Richards laughs.
I love Steely Dan’s music. Can’t Buy A Thrill is in my car CD now. This is sad news.
Once he got rid of Chevy Chase, there was nowhere to go but up.
YouTube is an incredible resource of live concerts. I’m still amazed how they get away with it (copyrights and all). I’m actually able to pull up concerts that I attended many years ago. Still haven’t been able to find myself in the audience.
Sirius/XM caught with their pants down on this one. Every station playing pre-recorded content. I suppose they gave their entire staff the weekend off. Still, would have been nice to have at least one station giving a tribute.
“No Static At All...”
FM
Hot Tuna? Really?
Husband used to play them on a reel to reel.
Remember those?
Is there gas in the car?
Yes, there’s gas in the car.
Politics aside, one of my favorite groups.
Lounging together with a lady friend in her low lit living room in ‘77.
She put on an album I had never heard before, Aja.
The first few notes and chords flowed over me
taking me to a beautiful place I had never been before,
the music so sweet and unexpectedly good, it made my toes curl.
I saw the full band in Toronto in 2003 at the Molson Amphitheatre
and again sans Becker at Massey Hall in Toronto 2006.
RIP Walter, your music will remain one of the favorite joys in my life.
Damn. Great music Mr. Becker. Definitely a major part of the soundtrack of my life.
R.I.P.
Oh yeah. Unfortunately, it says WE’RE OLD!
lol
But it beats the alternative, which the subject of this thread reminds us . . .
I was in charge of the music for our 40th class reunion (past FM rock DJ) and My Old School was defintely on the playlist.
The best thing about SD besides the music was Fagen’s lyrics.
“Is there gas in the car yes there’s gas in the car” has always been on my favorite lines...
Thanks for posting!
has always been ONE OF my favorite...
Damn Ammo, PROOFREAD!
If you ever wondered where the band name came from...
If one counts the number of times tunes are played on you tube on your computer while you work as a way to determine what your favorite group is then Steely Dan was my favorite. Sad I have to say that in past tense.
If Becker had a rough childhood, then perhaps he was on scholarship to Bard...private in northeast is usually a king’s ransom.
I hate the name of the band due to the porno nature, not to mention some song words like the fez...but the music is second to none...and the woven complexities of the rhythms, cords, etc., are superb...I’ve been known to play a few of them many times in a row to the consternation of my wife...in fact , my wife and I saw them in concert in I think 1995 or so in Raleigh, NC, ...some of the parents there were toking in front of their kids...that was strange, but it was the best concert I ever saw live.
