The NFL between a Rock and a Hard Place
American Thinker ^ | August 30,2017 | Jeff Goodson

The Squeezing of the NFL

All of this puts the NFL between a rock and a hard place. Even before the 2017 pre-season is over, a Seventh-Day Adventist church in Alabama accused the NFL of racism and announced a pro football "blackout." Two sports bars in Chicago are also boycotting NFL games until Kaepernick gets a job, and the NAACP has threatened a similar boycott.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the TV set, fans are up in arms. In the wake of Cleveland's show of disrespect on August 21, social media lit up. A local VFW post in Strongsville, Ohio (Post #3345) announced that it would no longer show Cleveland Browns games, and Ohio Supreme Court justice Bill O'Neill announced a boycott of the Browns, calling the player protest an attack on the military.

At the end of the day, black players want social change, and fans want football without the anti-America politics. The NFL just wants the problem to go away. It remains to be seen how many teams will join the "disrespect America" protests in 2017, and how many fans will respond with their clickers instead of watching their favorite sport become a political football in America's new culture wars. It also remains to be seen how the NFL will stop hemorrhaging both viewers and advertising revenue.

There's a lot at stake, and it's not just money. One more season of this, and we'll have a better idea of whether professional football in America has crossed the Rubicon. And a better idea of where America's culture wars are heading.

Good article. I predict this will not go well for the left. A large number of nominally conservative or apolitical people are going to realize that “it’s all about the revolution” and there is NO aspect of American life that is immune.

For the left, they will not react well to this, either in supporting politicized institutions, or at the ballot box.

Dear NFL, if you allow players to continue to do this taking a knee BS you will force me to shut the TV off and cease purchasing any products that carry the “proud sponsor of the National Football League.” I refuse to be insulted just to watch “a game.”

Hey, we all make choices...NFL, I would strongly suggest that you make your next choice carefully, or it will most definitely cost you dearly because me and my family are not alone, we will shut the TV off and stop buying any product that carry’s the NFL logo.

Love, retired Navy Chief!!!

Should have nipped this in the bud last pre-season.

Their demise is their own fault.

One of these days I expect to see an Antifa-type brawl in the stands.

Have you seen the cost of an NFL ticket? No way the Antifa-types are going to pony up the cash.

... fans want football without the anti-America politics.

Much of the blame lies squarely on the back of Roger Goodall and the NFL. The NFL, the once rigid organization that dictated every thread a player wore, turned a blind eye to what Kaepernick was doing. As a direct result the NFL let this situation fester and grow.

At one time in the NFL guys got significant fines for wearing inappropriate head bands. It wasn't until recently that the NFL dictated the maximum length of a guy's hair.

Nope, the NFL wants to be a squishy social laboratory rather than a business. The NFL sat on the train tracks thinking about unicorns and gumdrops while the freight train was barreling down the track. The results are fully predictable. No one wins now, least of all the NFL on the tracks.

yep.either he believes in this far left PC animal farm crap or he’s a coward and caved to one demand years ago. The left never stops, it keeps squeezing hard the more you show some movement like a damn boa constrictor.

Stand up to the SMALL group of big mouths the first time and it would end. It’s not as if these snowflakes on social media are the ones going to games and buying NFL the merch.
The NFL audience is pretty un-PC so a boycott would not matter.
Now the NFL has ticked off it’s audience to placate a loud small group.

This is a win-win for the SJWs. If the leftists have their way, the NFL becomes another useful idiot for the socialists. If the non-leftists give up on the NFL in disgust, the NFL folds, and another icon of American culture is overthrown, just like the statues, and the colleges before them, and the definition of marriage before them, and the breakdown of the family before that, and the normalization of drugs before that.

All of this Kaepernick crap is noise - he made his bed, let him lie there a while. The real issue with the NFL and, in fact all professional sports in the US is that we, the ultimate providers of revenue to the NFL and its franchises, pay for everything they have today. In light of the $125 million deal for the Lions quarterback (second rate at best) brings these issues to a boiling point. As fans we have to ask ourselves, how long will we continue to support this kind of lifestyle with absolutely no benefit accruing to us - the fan.

We pay far more for stadiums than Mercedes Benz does for naming rights, what’s wrong with that picture - to start why do we support public funding pf stadiums. Owners say they can’t afford it - start by offering the Lions guy $2mm a year, which is more than a lifetime of pay for most of us for his 6 months service. Ths alone frees up more than $100mm to service stadium debt. By the way, if stadiums are such a great investment, why are they not all owned privately????

Wake up sports fans, we’re are getting screwed right, left, center, over and under every day - it’s about time we stood up and say no more. So if you ask me, the entire nation should stand up and “no-show” week 1 of the NFL, stop buying player/team shirts etc. and don’t go to the game.

The alternative, shut up and keep paying!

Even though NASCAR supports the National Anthem, they are dying on their feet. They killed the product.

The NFL has the same problem but doesn’t realize it yet. With the commercials, the games have become unwatchable. In person, with all the commercial time outs, they have become boring.

The appearance of political correctness and social justice is going to make fans realize the NFL just isn’t a watchable product any more.

The League is 70% black.

There are 350 million people in this country. It amazes me that people are surprised or offended when something occurs they aren’t comfortable with. The NFL will continue to generate billions of dollars a year. The ratings will be fine. The owners will hire or shun whoever they want. All this nonsense will stop once the games begin. Take all your “outrage” at the NFL and channel it into helping Houston or something productive.

“I expect to see an Antifa-type brawl in the stands”

.

Oh the drugged out loser dummies are even too smart to do that. They’d be far out numbered. Even in cities like NYC the people in the stands are mostly white guys. The Antfa types like to stick to their safe space leftist cities where they are guaranteed police protection as they out number the other side.

Maybe their "employers" will do it. They ain't rioting on their own dime, of that you may be assured.

Waiting for video of BLM types invading a sports bar on a Sunday afternoon raising hell about NFL games being shown.

Should make for some “sporting” video.

“The NFL between a Rock and a Hard Place”

You can say that of the whole country. We are so divided culturally and racially that you wonder how much longer it will be before one or more states start “taking a knee” and leave the union.

If this keeps up, there may be a movement to oust Roger Goodell from the Commissioner’s office. No wonder why they still haven’t announce the extension of Goodell’s contract.

Um..the ratings ARE NOT fine for the NFL. You lose even 5% or so, and that is a ton of advertising revenue.
