No, it wasn't. He could have been hurt badly if they had let it go.
That said, this fight was a bit BS. McGregor, although I give him tremendous credit for how well he did, is clearly not a boxer. He was arm punching most of the fight, which doesn't allow him to get full power behind punches. He probably spent a significant amount of training time developing a straighter punching style than he's used in MMA. That was necessary, but unless you also learn to get your body behind a straight punch it just won't be as effective. He did learn a lot in terms of counterpunching in a boxing match, but he was essentially out on his feet at the end. That's not taking anything away from him. He earned more respect, in my opinion, than he would have in winning another MMA match. He left his own sport and competed in another. He deserves a lot of credit for that.
Mayweather is 40, and after the layoff he looked extremely rusty. If he was fighting a young boxer tonight he could easily have been in big trouble. Nonetheless, although outweighed by probably 15-20 pounds, and fighting a much younger fighter with greater reach, he was never in trouble and essentially fought as a flat footed aggressor against the bigger man. A younger fighter of the same weight as Mcgregor would very likely have ended this much earlier. That's not because boxing is better, or boxer's are tougher etc. It's because it was a boxing match, and McGregor is not, at this point, a boxer. No disrespect meant at all. As I said, I have great respect for what he did in the ring tonight.
The losers? Me, and everyone else who gave into the hype and despite knowing this was a crazy match up still forked over $100 for pay for view. I lost sleep, and money. I am clearly an idiot.
You had lots of company.
I may also be an idiot, but I have not watched a single boxing match my entire life.
I classify it right up there with cock-fighting and dog fighting...
Many would consider NASCAR the same way for the comfort...
Did you enjoy it? Live a little. Spend a few bucks. Stay up late. Not all the time, but don’t beat self up for enjoying a Saturday night towards end of summer.
