You’re making the same point I am trying to make. But you did it in two sentences. Props to you.
I'll ask a few questions:
When Shawna Nelson leaves her office in Seattle’s suburbs, she does what 28-year-olds often do:dines with friends,
1. What's the mark-up on eating out every night vs. shopping at a grocery store and eating your own meals at home?
goes out dancing, or sees a show.
2. What if she limited this to weekends, and used the weeknights to home cook, tidy, pay bills, and invite friends over to watch TV or a movie?
Sometimes she hits her swanky gym.
3. Does the gym need to be "swanky?" Is there someplace more affordable in her career-starting range?
“Would I rather spend $1,200 on an apartment that I’m probably not going to be at very much, or would I rather spend $1,200 a month on traveling?”
4. Are this generation's "twentysomethings" setting expectations too high, or is this just the new lifestyle reality? Am I stuck in old-timer thinking, or will she soon wish that she had spent the time establishing a household routine. Where is she getting her mail? Where is she registered to vote? How is she establishing her credit without a history of rent or mortgage payments?

5. I wonder if this is an illusion (or delusion) that is really a sort of "confirmation bias," that is, she thinks she's living more fully, when she really isn't?
I think it's going to be harder for her to form a long-term relationship, but that's just me? Maybe she's not embarrassed to tell a potential suitor that she lives out of her car?

I'm not going to do any of that, but I guess if I end up homeless (which I don't anticipate), I've got an alternative.
All good points, but I’m of the mind that I have no business questioning her financial priorities. It sounds like she’s figured out a way to live the way she wants without dumping $1,200 into someone else’s pocket every month for an apartment where she wouldn’t be spending much time anyway. I say “Go for it!” LOL.
Personally, I think she's going to be a future crime statistic, when some street person stumbles onto her car in the middle of the night when she's sleeping.

Makes sense to me - If some folks want to live this way, I’ve got very little against it, but its not for me.
You don't know what they put into the food. And by definition, more expensive.
Of course it’s more expensive,but can be just as healthy.

A small bucket, trash can liner, toilet paper, cat litter and wet wipes.
Insert liner in bucket, sprinkle enough litter to cover the bottom.
Do your bidness.
Clean with tp and wet wipes.
Sprinkle enough litter to cover contents.
Securely tie liner closed.
Dispose of at next available dumpster or trash can.
With the available parking spaces not keeping up with the number of trucks in service I used this method many times.
I will say that I NEVER left my bags on the roadway or at parking lots. I always disposed of them properly.
I am currently planning the renovation of a van to tour the country. I am planning to use the bucket system for emergencies as well as a Scottish shower, additionally, showers can be had at truck stops for around $5.
I did my traveling on Uncle Sam’s dime. 45 countries all over the world. Now that I’m retired my traveling consists of going between my Alaska house and my Arizona house. Two decent sized houses. Not some little shack.
There are already long-term RV places popping up with pretty nice-looking “docks” for the RV, with an extended living area, large bath, screened porch, living room with flex space, murphy bed, etc. and some of them are really nice looking, just pull into the structure, somewhat like a detached carport with decking at RV door level. If they establish something nice and standardized, and build them scattered around the country, I could see it taking off. There really are a lot of people who have just hit the road, from “workampers” following jobs to retirees.
As to females sleeping in their cars, with the high percentage of high order serial killers in the Pacific Northwest, they might want to reconsider that option. Other non-homicidal predators are also on the loose.
How does one without a fixed address obtain:
A drivers license
Voter registration
bank account and credit cards.
etc. PO boxes are NG How does one hold on to a real job?

Zoning restrictions work well. A two story city limit on apartments keeps out the ghetto.
No. SROs infringe on other people’s right to uncrowded streets. In fact quintuple the rent on SROs.
All high rise apartments should be ghetto’d to one side of town away from the interstate.
Trash can feces is a BIOHAZARD.
Something about pooping (city) where you eat. Sewers were invented for a reason, to eliminate disease.

High density housing does not mean ghetto. If that were the case Manhattan would be one big ghetto. Downtown Chicago (where I have more direct experience) has built in my estimation over 100k new residential condo units over the last 15 years. It hasn’t harmed anything. The downtown area is vibrant and there are so many young people out and about on the streets.
I read SF has such restrictions on density that you speak of. The result is that as the population grows, things have to be spread out wider. More commuting and time stuck in traffic.
Historically, a place where industrious but poor people could live in a shared commons environment, right in the heart of the city, is called a convent or rectory. :-)
She could probably find a decent used Airstream for $10,000.

Save your money and buy a nice little Condo sweetie. The sacrifice will be worth it and you won’t have to worry about a Mortgage or having to cut the Grass.
