His lapel pin is modeled after the Chicago city flag.

The 4 red stars on the Chicago flag represent major events in Chicago history. When I checked Wikipedia to make sure I got them right, it listed Fort Dearborn, The Chicago Fire of 1871, The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, and the Century of Progress Exposition of 1933–34.

Here's an interesting point. When I was a school child in Chicago a long time ago, what I learned was that the first star represented "The Massacre at Fort Dearborn" in 1812. (The Potowatami Indians killed more than half of the people who lived in the fort, when they evacuated the fort). Somewhere along the line, the actual event got changed to just the Fort. Sounds like somebody re-wrote history here, but that could be just my narrow view.
