DVID reports on the damage sustained by the Navy vessel:

Damage to the portside is visible as the Guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) steers towards Changi Naval Base, Republic of Singapore, following a collision with the merchant vessel Alnic MC while underway east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore on Aug. 21. Significant damage to the hull resulted in flooding to nearby compartments, including crew berthing, machinery, and communications rooms. Damage control efforts by the crew halted further flooding. The incident will be investigated.

For just a second, didn’t it make you wonder if it was ominous?

Someone’s no longer gonna be a captain.

The Harpoon missile tubes, which have live missiles in them. That could have caused a really big fire. Solid fuel missiles really burn.

Someone is taking out our navy one ship at a time.

Not being Navy, commander = captain?————— O-5’s found on many ships as Commanders. Captains are O-6. usually the Larger vessels (My guess, but I’m Army.).

"Rumors are both captains are affirmative action guys."

Still, how hard can it be to miss something as big as a tanker out in the open ocean? With modern electronics they only have about a day or two notice that the thing is coming. Even with eyesight you'd be able to see the thing an hour or two away in the day light. There are certainly competent junior officers and staff to give the Captain a three or four hour "heads up" to change course or we're going to hit a big oil tanker. Makes no sense. Once maybe, but twice in three months?

Both the container ship that hit the Fitzgerald and the tanker that hit the McCain had bulbous bows. A feature on most large ships now a days.

Scary thought. These types of collisions do seem improbable given modern technology.

On a ship that size, the CO would probably be a Commander.

Time to ban those bulbous noses on oil tankers.

Time to get rid of incompetent USN captains. The USS John McCain has the best radar and navigation equipment the taxpayer can buy. It is faster and more maneuverable than any oil tanker. There is no reason to be hit by such a ship even if it tried to hit the McCain.

Maybe drugs are involved. We need more facts.

Many of the junior officers are also affirmative action promotions. The military is being destroyed by all this social justice crap. As for your other question, yes, managing to not miss something that big is quite a feat. I bet the investigation will be a whitewash.

This looks like a coordinated attack to me. Just think about it. If GPS spoofing can be used to manipulate a UAV into landing in hostile territory, how hard would it be to manipulate a commercial ship’s course into ramming a US Navy vessel?

I fear the missing are inside a flooded compartment and won’t be recovered until the hole is plugged with plate so the pumps can begin their work.

Doesn’t make any difference what the rank is, the Commanding Officer a Naval vessel is always referred to a “Captain”. It can be an 03 commanding a minesweeper, and 04 commanding a LCS, an 05 commanding a destroyer or an 06 commanding a cruiser, carrier or battleship, all are referred to as Captain

Not Navy either, but it’s confusing. “Commander” and “Captain” are both ranks, but whoever is in charge of a navy vessel is called “captain” as well. So I guess captain is both a rank and a job title. Someone will correct me if I’m wrong.
