I was young at the time but I understood that the main interest of the people at this company was anti-communist. They wanted what was best for the Africans and felt that communism wasn’t.

I agree that Communism was, and is, the plague that needed opposition. In Africa it was primarily (if not only) the South African and Rhodesian armies that were opposing the Soviet, Cuban, and Maoist intrusions. The United Nations, and unfortunately us - most of the time - were supporting the communists.
Although not communist led, the Rwandan Genocide (led primarily by animists, francophiles, and tribal animosities between the Hutus and Tutsis) was aided and abetted by the United Nations (plus millions of machetes shipped to the Hutus from Red China). I don't know why. Maybe the Tutsis were too Christian for the U.N.
