No-name congressman thinks he’s a big deal
NY Post ^ | August 18, 2017 | Lia Eustachewich

It’s a list of demands that makes even Mariah Carey look low-maintenance.

A hefty, eight-page memo detailing what it takes to be a driver for Rep. Todd Rokita has been revealed — and it’s not for the faint of heart.

The Indiana congressman demands that his chauffeurs double as personal assistants who greet him at pickup with a fresh cup of hot, black coffee and never be without gum and hand sanitizer.

Rokita’s toiletry bag, with his toothbrush and toothpaste, is to be kept in the trunk of the car, along with a nearly 20-item supply box dubbed “The Football” containing an always-stocked inventory of more gum, hand sanitizer, a blue Sharpie (for signing letters), lozenges, Kleenex, a stapler, staples and a staple remover and Shout wipes.

Besides chauffeuring him, drivers must ensure that Rokita is never photographed with a drink in his hand — but are asked to “get Todd a non-alcoholic drink that he can carry with him” when he arrives at an event.

“Water, diet soda and coffee are best,” the memo advised.

The Republican’s diva-like demands are outlined in the internal memo titled “Instructions on Staffing and Driving” and obtained by Politico.

The politician is also quite the backseat driver, demanding that he be informed of “turns and sudden stops” and that his driver avoid “sudden acceleration or braking.”

“The goal is to provide as smooth a ride as possible,” the memo said.

A coat hanger must always be available in the vehicle so Rokita can hang up his coat or jacket.

The 47-year-old, a top contender in Indiana’s competitive GOP Senate race next year, also does not want to be interrupted “with unnecessary conversation” during his precious prep time in the car.

And don’t let him forget his personal items after an event or meeting.

He is from Munster IN and was very accessible as Indiana Secy. of State. Agree hit piece on conservative. The only one benefitting from this is Joe Donnelly.

Donnelly got in b/c establishment Indiana GOPE took their ball and went home after Lugar was upset by Richard Mourdock in primary. At that time, Lugar was deciding vote not to filibuster Kagan as USSC nominee. Indiana GOPE did nothing to help Mourdock

Messer was a Boehner acolyte.

It is not the demands per se that are offensive; it is the fact that we are paying for it that is offensive. The arrogant a$$holes that are in the Fake Congress forget that WE are their masters, not the other way around.

BTW, all I need to know is they accept no responsibility. “Edson blamed the memo leak on Rokita’s presumptive Senate challenger, Rep. Luke Messer (R-Ind.)”

Just a thought here, but do you maybe suppose that this article might just be a hit piece on a guy who is a strong Conservative?

It probably is, which is why strong conservatives should avoid putting themselves in situations that leave them open to hit pieces. The concept is nothing new. Remember when Bill Clinton avoided the draft then signed up after it ended in order to maintain his political viability?

"Heck I have all that stuff in every one of my vehicles and being met with a hot cup of joe will earn my gratitude."

Not to put too fine a point on it, but personally I prefer Altoids to gum And I like coffee iced - Dunkin Donuts Iced Black with a shot of mocha.

I agree. Seems more like a hit piece than anything else.

It’s not like the guy is asking for a red carpet to be laid out everywhere he goes and for people to divert their eyes as he passes (as Hillary reportedly did). He wants pens, gum and hand sanitizer and the driver not to stop short when he has coffee in his hand. Oooh! What a scandal!

I don’t give a rat’s hairy hind end how he votes.

Uh -- whut?

I've heard of the conservative movement being hampered by voters who won't support someone who isn't a "100% conservative purist," but this is the first time I've heard of someone state that a "100% conservative purist" voting record is irrelevant. WTF?

After reading the post to which you are responding here I decided this was an argument probably not worth pursuing.

Your mileage may vary.

So what’s it pay?

I’d do it for $160,000 a year.

Sound like something out of a made for TV movie. Some gum smacker out trying to be somebody.

Then again you never know, maybe someone else with an axe to grind is just making stuff up...

That’s what I was wondering. Its easy to paint a picture with adjectives, as easy as it is to paint the opposite picture with a different set using the same facts.
The Left is tricksy and may want to take down this guy.

Basically this man took the time to let his aides what they need to remember to be prepared and what he would be expecting from them. I don’t know the guy but letting the drivers know you are planning to work in the car so the don’t feel that they should chat to show they are friendly sounds fine to me. Its exactly what Tillerson did to the press.
