Is the Party of Lincoln Now the Party of Lee?
National Review ^ | August 17, 2017 | Mona Charen

...

Contra Donald Trump, the Hitler Youth wannabes who paraded through Charlottesville last Friday night are not sincere Republicans falsely accused of being Nazis. They are the real thing. It should have been the most basic act of American civic hygiene to condemn and anathematize them. (Some Republicans did.) But since it seems we must state the obvious: The “Unite The Right” organizers, including alt-right leaders Richard Spencer and Jason Kessler, advertised their demonstration with Nazi-style imagery, carried torches reminiscent of Nuremberg and Klan rallies, and chanted “Blood and soil” and “The Jews will not replace us.” The next day, they clashed with counter-protesters, and one of them committed a savage act of ISIS-style terrorism, crashing his car into a crowd. He murdered one person and wounded 19 others, five critically.

Yet Trump’s Monday condemnation, if you can call it that, was tardy, stilted, and almost immediately withdrawn by his fiery Tuesday press conference. True to his pattern of peddling “alternative facts,” Trump insisted that “not all of those people were supremacists by any stretch . . . you take a look . . . the night before, they were there to protest the taking down of the statue of Robert E. Lee.” I’ve taken a look. How does “the Jews will not replace us” convey benevolence?

I am unsentimental about statues of Robert E. Lee myself. He made war on this country to preserve one of the worst forms of abuse known to man. During the Civil War, when he captured black Union soldiers, he re-enslaved them. When it came time for prisoner exchanges, Lee refused to exchange African American Union soldiers for Confederate prisoners. General Ulysses Grant responded that in that case, there would be no further prisoner exchanges.

No. But the socialist-democrats are now the party of Hitler, Mao, and Stalin/Lenin, all rolled up into one.

The socialist-democrats are the new american NEO-NAZI party.

No. The party of Lincoln knew how to deal respectfully of people like Lee.

The DNC is trying to scrub their history. That’s what is happening right now.

How many people do you suppose are in ANTIFA?

What percentage of our population would they be?

These are a bunch of paid hell raisers.

Obama was in office for eight years and not a peep about statues.

They’re just prostitutes.

They’re paid to screw around.

I think we’re conservatives who like to conserve and preserve. Conservation and preservation.

I think that antifa has much less support than is being touted in the press.

It is entirely possible that the only support for them is in the press and some politicians.

My great grandfather was part of the Army that fought Lee. After the war, he gave his kids the middle name “Lee” - out of respect for the commander of the army he had fought against. One of his sons, my grandfather, did the same.

Oddly enough, none of the kids had “Lincoln” as part of their name...

One of the concepts I learned about in my military studies was

The Golden Bridge.

If you are in combat with someone, give them a chance to quit the fight.

Maybe you offer to let them surrender.

Maybe you let them leave the battlefield but without their heavy equipment.

If you fight someone and make it a fight to the death, then it’s a fight...

To the death.

After four years of War in this country, I think that everyone, everyone, was tired of the butchery.

The Union offered acceptable terms to the Confederate Soldiers and the awful fighting was done.

The Union leaders didn’t make it a fight to the death.

They gave the Confederates a Golden Bridge to go over.

I think that part of this Golden Bridge was that the Confederates could respect their military leaders.

I think that we had a lot of families who had family members in the Confederate Army and they want to respect them.

I believe that we should allow those families the continuation of The Golden Bridge.

Any statues dedicated to slavery, honoring slavery, should be removed.

All right. The sanctimonious National Review lady implies that because some of the organizers of the original protest used Nazi regalia, including out and out Nazi banners--indeed visible in some of the pictures--that no people of good will were involved. She then attacks General Lee, referring to some issue over prisoner exchanges with General Grant.

I am not familiar with the incident to which she refers. But it is well known that not only did Grant treat Lee & his men with the greatest respect at the surrender; Grant threatened an actual mutiny if the radicals were to arrest Lee, afterward.

Whether the "Nazis" at the rally were genuine supporters of the German Socialist movement, or people playing some sort of role for some other ulterior purpose, it is doubtful that the flag wavers were more committed to imposing monolithic socialist uniformity on America than the counter-protestors, who clearly embraced the tactics the Brownshirts employed in the early 1930s, to intimidate all dissent from the eventual Nazi takeover.

In the clash of those unable to tolerate any dissent, Donald Trump was completely right to lay the blame for the rumble on those who came for that purpose. And completely right to recognize that everyone there was not a party to that intention.

Compulsion For Uniformity

As for General Lee? Miss Charon would have to look long & hard to find a nobler man in any land, at any time. Nor will she find one more genuinely revered by Conservative Americans North & South. His example, after the war, did more than any other to promote reconciliation, based upon mutual respect!

In a galaxy far far away, the party of Lincoln used to be the party of Washington and Jefferson. You know, that thing called the U.S. Constitution.

The Left, media, academia, Hollywood and the Democrat party are the domestic enemy that I took an oath to defeat.

All bets are off.

She doesn’t know her history. At the end of the War, Lincoln wanted to reunite the country, not put his boot on the neck of the South and beat it to death.

Another one-time-sensible voice on the right jumps the tracks - even Stuart Varney is starting to wobble - is it really so critical to show that yes you don’t like racists and Nazis just like everybody else that you lose perspective and sight of who really caused the violence in Charlottesville and is the real threat to this country? - it’s for sure not a couple of hundred silly folks advocating causes that are long dead for all intents and purposes.....
