Trump needs to shore up the base a bit with Bannon's departure - firing McMaster (or shipping him to Afghanistan) will accomplish that. Right now, Trump is being isolated from his braintrust - the people he is depending on now are swamp creatures, mostly.
Instead it is likely that Trump’s big Camp David powwow today will lead to more troops going into (and dying in) Afghanistan.
