In the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, which left one dead and at least 38 injured, many members of the national media were quick to blame the Unite the Right rally attendees for the outbreak of street warfare between alt-right and alt-left protesters.
But according to the ACLU and reporters covering the rally, the violence escalated due to what many believe was an intentional lack of police oversight, with the blame aimed squarely at Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
The police actually allowed us to square off against each other, one counter-protester told CNN. There were fights, and the police were standing a block away the entire time. Its almost as if they wanted us to fight each other.
The ACLU also contends the passive police presence may have been intentional to allow authorities to declare an unlawful assembly and justify shutting down the rally.
We asked the city to adhere to the U.S. Constitution and ensure peoples safety at the protest. It failed to do so. In our system, the city makes the rules and the courts enforce them, the ACLU of Virginias Executive Director Claire Gastanaga said in a statement. It is the responsibility of law enforcement to ensure safety of both protesters and counter-protesters. The policing on Saturday was not effective in preventing violence.

The blame begins and ends with McAuliffe within Virginia. Outside influences (DEMs, Soros) are also there. The police did not react as they did by their own direction. The ACLU is just using this opportunity to take a shot at police in general.
McAuliffe is a Democrat thug and should be cuffed and sent off to jail for what he did in Charlottesville with his two cronies the Mayor the Racist Assistant Mayor, Methinks the evil, hateful hands of Obama, Clinton & Soros are in this gig up to their necks & eyeballs!!! Stay tuned, the truth is about to opt out. Sessions & Wray...what happened in the helicopter accident....not a word has been said, one way or another. I smell a rat(DemoRAT).
McAuliffe is a socialist-democrat first, and being governor is just his daytime gig.
That rat bastard actually tried to start a riot between these two groups in Charlottesville. All of the actions of the police, city, courts, and state point right to that conclusion.
Claire better watch her six.
BLM, Antifa and the Democrats, the Fascist Left for short, will gunning for her for speaking the truth.
Truth tellers are verboten by the Fascist Left.
I have seen and heard witnesses state that the 2 groups were actually ‘herded’ together by police personnel.
The ACLU was aligned with the Nazis.
One does not speak against the Bolsheviks. To do so is a death sentence. Among statists today the enforcers of the revolution are sacrosanct. When bolsheviks attack brownshirts the devil is at war with himself. President Trump is correct, as usual. These two batallions of evil and stupidity deserve each other. They are cast in the same mold.
Note to ruling class: it’s very difficult to undo an entire country. You can infiltrate politics and propagandize police departments, but there are some very essential parts of your agenda that you will never be able to accomplish.
The police are responsible for maintaining law and order. The protesters are responsible for maintaining peaceful actions on their own part.
Any protester, on any side, who instigated violence should be arrested and charged.
The police, and their elected masters, should be arrested and charged if their actions (as is evident in this case, IMO) caused two opposing sides to come into conflict due to proximity - especially when the police supposedly had a plan to ensure no such violence would ensue, but decided to follow a plan to put the two groups in close contact with no supervising presence.
The fact of the matter appears to be that the police had 4 directions in which they could disperse the protesters in the park. 3 went through police-controlled areas. The 4th went straight into the Antifa mob. The police decided to funnel the permitted protesters into the Antifa mob.
New York City is a leftist dump, but you rarely see riots there because they have a police force in excess of 30,000 that is larger than the military forces of most countries.
Flying in formation.
After all the grief the police have caught during the past 8 years when they legitimately try to keep the peace and they or some rioter or criminal who won’t stand down gets hurt or killed, they probably wish all troublemakers and rabble rousers of any stripe would kill each other and save them having to deal with them. If a violent and hate-spewing neo-Nazi and a violent and hate-spewing Antifa agitator kill each other, the police likely don’t give a rip.
I would think that MOST police departments have a common mantra of “To protect and to serve”. Apparently in Charlottesville, Virginia, their mantra is “To protect and to serve, unless people are assembling to exercise their first amendment rights”.
Many cities, I’m not sure of Charlottesville, but many cities require that the group requesting the permit must pay for any additional protection deemed necessary to control/protect the protesters/counter-protesters (this depends on the size, expectations, etc...).
But, are you asking if the police/city/State have some sort of “constitutional” expectation to keep people safe while they are trying to exercise their basic rights?
IN GENERAL, I would say YES, the police/city/State are supposed to protect people while they are exercising their basic rights.
Are you suggesting that basic protection is too much to ask of the police/city/State?
“...violent and hate-spewing Antifa agitator....” What? I thought we’d already been informed that there’s no such thing. Right?
Any time groups of people (small or very large) want to peaceably assemble under their first amendment rights, the state needs to also assemble an equivalent police force and its the fault of the state of the peaceable protesters dont stay peaceful?
It seems to me that if they are not peaceful they've lost all constitutional protection and it's the government's job to nip it!
Politics creates strange bedfellows and all that.
Is it Bizaaro World? I actually agree with the ACLU.
No they won't.
