The underlying premise is that Southern whites in the 1860s were uniquely bad. In fact racism as we now call it (the word wasn't invented until later) was just as prevalent in the North. Lincoln had to make the war a war to reunite the Union--if he had made it a war to end slavery at the outset the North would have failed. Tocqueville in Democracy in America (1830s) thought racial prejudice was more intense in regions where slavery had been abolished than in regions where it still existed.
