“Chicago is a French rendering of a Native-American name for a flower.”
More precisely, it was an Indian word for “stinky onion.”

I have also heard it means the “place where skunks live.” There is an Indian legend that a hunting party came through and asked the locals for a good place to hunt. They were sent to cheecagu, which was overrun with skunks.
I am partial to that story for a lot of reasons.
