McAuliffe's actions in Charlottesville under fire, independent review demanded

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe's actions before and after the deadly weekend race clashes in Charlottesville are coming under fire amid calls for an independent review to determine if politics played a role.

Former Republican Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore on Tuesday raised new questions about Richmond's involvement in the riots the claimed three lives and said the public "needs to know" if the state and city had taken the proper precautions to avoid the clashes and if police were told to stand down.

The ACLU said McAuliffe was using the group as a scapegoat. (Graeme Jennings/Washington Examiner) In an interview with Secrets, he dismissed McAuliffe's call for an internal review. Instead, Gilmore, who was a presidential candidate in 2016, said that an independent group must be charged with the investigation, taking it out of the governor's office.

"This has to be an independent review. We have to know what the governor did, how he participated in it, whether he was part of the meetings, whether he had a meeting, whether the secretary of public safety was in the meeting, where it was held, was it in Richmond or Charlottesville, what planning was done, and what constraints if any were put on the police," said Gilmore, a former Virginia attorney general and county attorney.

Gilmore, president of the American Opportunity Foundation, formerly known as the Free Congress Foundation, said, "While we support the police, we know they do a good job, we don't know what direction they got at the time of the Charlottesville riots."

Several reports have said that the police stood by as white supremacists and their foes faced off in fights. Others said that when the violence escalated, unprepared police had to leave to get proper equipment.

Gilmore also said there was a report that some police were "asked to stand aside and be more passive."

He added, "They didn't have a plan to separate these groups. The governor seems to be blaming everybody else."

Gilmore said, "You have to have afore-knowledge of what is ready to happen and a plan in place to be able to deal with it so the police can carry out the plan. In this case the was no plan apparently to divide these people from one to the other. We need to know, we need to be advised as to what action was taken or not taken."

In a televised statement Saturday, McAuliffe seemed to blame the white hate groups for the violence, but he later blamed the ACLU which sued to keep the protest in downtown Charlottesville.

Correct. The KKK was started by a radical hate group and racist dems. The American Nazis, skinheads, and Traditional Workers Party are more aligned with communism. Nazi means National Socialist if I remember right. Socialist is just commie light.

Ya know, on average, I've found those of us on the right tend to be far less racist than our counterparts on the left. Just a personal observation but it makes me wonder why blacks don't see this. As far as Hispanics go; it's all about being here legally and speaking our language. If someone has that covered and support America; I don't see a problem. It's the illegals who are the problem taking jobs from legal immigrants and natural born Americans.

RICHMOND, Va. – Funeral arrangements for Virginia State Police Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates were finalized Tuesday.

Cullen and Bates died after their helicopter crashed near Charlottesville while they were patrolling near the site of the white supremacist “Unite the Right” rally. Both men died at the scene.

The visitation for Bates will take place Thursday from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home at 4650 South Laburnum Ave. in Richmond. The funeral is set for Friday at 11 a.m. at Saint Paul’s Baptist Church at 4247 Creighton Rd. in Richmond. The interment will be a private graveside service.

The visitation for Cullen will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Home at 14301 Ashbrook Pkwy. in Chesterfield, Virginia. The funeral is set for Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Southside Church of the Nazarene at 6851 Courthouse Rd. in Chesterfield. The interment will also be a private graveside service.

I could just leave this at something flippant, like “Of course they support the terrorist wing of the Democrat party.” But the truth is that the ACLU is being more clever: they’ll support right-wing groups if it helps advance their radical left-wing agenda by getting precedents that are useful to their own ends. So they’ll support the KKK’s freedom to assembly, but not the pro-life movement’s. That’s NOT consistency.
