So, Carter pulled a gun the night before and scared folks bad enough to call the police. Cops show up and “diffuse” the situation? Wow.

The cops did diffuse the situation. They helped spread the actual violence out so it didn't occur until the next day. Too bad they didn't deFUSE the situation.

Some areas have places called “The Badlands” but I’m not sure which you’re referring to.

I think Southern Indiana has a “badlands” but I LOVE it there. I think it’s some sort of official designation too.

Just wondering how the heroin problem is there. I so wish we could bring a future back to Indiana, Ohio, WV, Kentucky and Pennsylvania from the heroin spurge. Bring back those steel powered by coal plants and get industry growing again.
How can we fight a WW3 if we don’t have steel and manufacturing. They have sold us out for cheap labor. We need to bring back our industry and export illegals. No need to a $15

Actually yes. "defuse" would indicate the danger had been eliminated, which obviously was not the case. "diffuse" implies merely amelioration, possibly temporary.

There are more local groups and projects that are addressing the heroin problem than there are addicts. At least here there are.

But yeah, it’s bad. I blame my area’s problems (All of them) on our proximity of NY and NJ.

The rest I blame on Pittsburgh and Philly. Get away from these areas and it’s absolutely beautiful living in PA.

I have to leave, unfortunately, because of the homeschooling laws and regulations. But I will come back.

This is addressed on a lot of grammar sites and i agree this particular usage is a murky area. I see your point and had considered that as well. But Grammarist covered it well with some incorrect examples and swayed me that it should be "defused." I've noticed that "diffused" seems to be a common usage in London. What else would you expect from those who confuse a "bonnet" for a hood, a "tyre" for a tire, and a "boot" for a trunk?
Grammarist: Confusion of defuse and diffuse is so common that we actually had some difficulty finding examples of diffuse used correctly. Here are just a few of the problematic examples we found:

1) It’s difficult to diffuse this much dynamite. [Times Leader]

2) Police negotiated with Finnegan in an attempt to diffuse the situation. [Cape Cod Online]
