He's not a slick politician talking out of both sides of his mouth. He tells it like it is, especially in that news conference. He specifically said that there were "very fine people on both sides", then went on to describe the fine people protesting the removal of the statue. The rest of what he said was also accurate.
There were all kinds of people there outside of extremist groups, with video footage, including armed patriots some in full gear who were there to protect free speech.
