House Speaker Busch: Time to remove Taney statue from Maryland State House grounds (Dred Scott)
Baltimore Sun ^ | 14 August 2017 | Erin Cox

In the wake of a violent white supremacist rally in neighboring Virginia, House Speaker Michael E. Busch said Monday it’s time to take down Maryland’s most prominent Confederate-era monument.

Busch said the statue of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Roger B. Taney — author of the infamous 1857 Dred Scott decision that upheld slavery and denied citizenship to black people — should no longer preside over the front lawn of the Maryland State House.

“It certainly doesn’t belong there,” said Busch, an Anne Arundel County Democrat.

“It's the appropriate time to remove it,” he said. Leaving it in place after white supremacists openly rallied “would send a message that we condone what took place, that slavery is alright.”...

I’ve got to admit I’m conflicted on this one because I’ve always considered Taney and Dred Scott the real cause of the Civil War it was an appalling ruling it was pure judicial activism and anti state rights in that it reached into an free state

the reality is that many on the South Side fought bravely and nobly and I’ve always supported their right to be celebrated

but I also felt that the South probably would have resolved slavery and dissolve slowly and things been allowed to work themselves out

Tanner’s ruling inflamed the whole damn thing

I think the tactic that will result out of this...is that the alt-right will begin to yank down every single statue that exist. Fancy art statues, non-civil war statues, etc. It’ll all be dragged down. You can see the sequences going on here, and easy decisions made like in this Taney statue...it’ll just perk everyone to say all statues go down.

And then when Muslims take over France they’ll have a bonfire of the masterpieces on the front lawn.

Same mentality.

How about any monument or place named in honor of Lyndon “I’ll Have Them N*ggers Voting Democrat for 200 Years” Johnson?

The Democrats have a lot of erasing to do. When do we get around to erasing all the things names after Robert Byrd? We can throw in FDR for Japanese internment camps.

I’m suggesting a trade: Take down the Taney statue if we can take Busch out of the state legislature. He’s as good a fascist as Maryland has provided in a long time, him and Miller (a Mussolini-wannabe).

And he belonged to the Democratic Party.

Notables:
1777: Roger Brooke Taney was born on March 17, 1777 in Calvert County, Maryland, the son of Monica (Brooke) and Michael Taney.

1806: Taney married Anne Phoebe Charlton Key, sister of Francis Scott Key, on January 7, 1806.

1833: In 1833, as secretary of the Treasury, Taney ordered an end to the deposit of Federal money in the Second Bank of the United States, an act that killed the institution.

1835: In January 1835 Jackson, in defiance of the Senate’s rejection of Taney as Treasury Secretary, nominated Taney as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court to replace the retiring Gabriel Duvall.

1857: By the time he wrote his Dred Scott opinion in 1857, he labeled the opposition to slavery as “northern aggression”, a popular phrase among pro-slavery Southerners.

1861: Taney personally administered the oath of office to Lincoln, his most prominent critic, on March 4, 1861.

I’m surprised this dolt didn’t suggest renaming Taneytown, MD. It was founded by a distant relative of Roger B. Taney and that’s just close enough.

Erasing history is the easiest way to rewrite it.

Yep, it worked for awhile for Stalin, and look where that got the russians.

Others trying to erase history - the Taliban, ISIS, (you can add to the list)

They will remove lawn jockey statues next, even though those were originally created to mark stops on the Underground Railroad.
