Michael Bennett [Seahawks] sits for anthem with more NFL players set to follow

Several players plan protests following violence in Charlottesville Colin Kaepernick still without a team after protest last season Bennett says protest is not a sign of disrespect for military

The day after Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch sat out the national anthem, his former team-mate Michael Bennett has followed his lead.

The Seattle Seahawks defensive end, who is known for his strong views, sat with a towel draped over his head during the anthem before Sunday’s game against the Los Chargers. Bennett said he plans to continue the protest for the rest of the season, and his stance was influenced by the far-right violence in Charlottesville over the weekend. Colin Kaepernick attracted attention when he chose to kneel for the anthem last season as a protest at racial injustice in the United States.

“The last week, with everything that’s been going on in the last couple months—especially after the last couple days seeing everything in [Charlottesville] Virginia ... [I] just wanted to be able to continue to use my platform to be able to speak on injustice,” Bennett said after Sunday’s game.

Stop playing the National Anthem before sporting events all together. It is not played before movies, concerts, etc. It’s a tradition I think we can live without.

Doing so would not be an admission of “defeat.” Would folks still boycott the NFL if it took this action?

stop supporting these over paid anti-American football “superstars” Drop football—re-embrace Baseball—Americas real national pastime. Punish the NFL—Don’t buy tickets, don’t watch the games. If you must see football watch college games or high school games.

Lynch has long been lackadaisical in participation. He stands, sits sometime, or is still in the locker room. Did it for years in Seattle. No one cared until Kaepernick.

I want too thank the NFL for freeing up my Sunday afternoons this fall.
Life is too short to spend time watching ignorant, spoiled rich kids playing a game while crapping on my country.
Thanx NFL !!!

Amazing how the NFL has rules for a lot of things, down to what kind of socks can be worn. Yet, they accept disrespect for our Nation and it’s flag. For me, that says what the NFL itself thinks of the nation and as such, I will not watch or support it.

I watched zero NFL games last season because of this kind of behavior. Looks like I’ll be skipping this season, as well. No biggie, because I prefer college football, anyway.

NFL rapidly becoming the NBA.

When Boomer announced brain damage, it was over. It will take 20 years perhaps, but look for the NFL to become Arena Football and the players coddled divas who stroll around the field like NBA stars with an occasional exertion and an occasional contested play.

I don’t get this. What’s the end game here?

Every protest needs to have a goal. I don’t see theirs at all.

Why can Google fire someone for not “fitting in”, but the NFL owners can’t/won’t?

To get rid of the National Anthem, altogether.

I’m having a hard time empathizing. If you think something is wrong in society, say so. Stand up for it.

I just don’t understand sitting for the anthem. Turning away from the flag. It doesn’t make sense to me. If this place is so bad, GTFO!

If you love it but think there are problems, stay and change them... but the problem isn’t the flag. It’s not the nation and it’s people. If you think it is, then you need only to hold up a mirror to see what needs changing.

It just doesn’t make sense.

When I try to sympathize, I guess it’s a sense of alienation. But again I ask, if you are that alienated, why aren’t you doing something besides attacking the symbol of your nation?

how long are teams going to be able to keep on paying players the big bucks when everyone seems to be foregoing season tickets and boycotting games and sponsors?
