Reporter: Police Were Called Off When Violence Started – They Said, "We’re Leaving"

FOX News reporter Doug McKelway attended the violent protests Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia.

McKelway told FOX News viewers the police pulled out of Lee Park after the violence started. The police told him, “We’re leaving. It’s too dangerous.”

Doug McKelway: We are now beginning to hear criticism bubble up on all sides of this event about the initial slow response by the police. When I got out of my car yesterday in Charlottesville about 10:30 in the morning you knew this was a bad scene and bad things were going to be happening because people were congregating at Lee Park and Emancipation Park wearing helmets, body armor, carrying big heavy sticks. Nobody was intent on peace here from either side. People were intent on causing havoc and causing damage. And even as wounded were being brought out of the park police were sitting idly by. I was standing off a cordoned off area where the police had set up as a staging area, the state police, and they said you can come in here this is a safe area. But when the tear gas started to fly, thrown by protesters, the police themselves began to evacuate then. I asked the guy who was in charge, “Where you going?” He said, “We’re leaving. It’s too dangerous.” They had a chance to nip this thing in the bud and they chose not to.

Anyone police executive that cares to could read any number of after action reports from Ferguson and Baltimore and be prepared.

They failed to have the assets and plans in place for this, forced the two sides to collide and then left.

Somebody has to tell that mayor to go to hell, we have to keep peace.

And if that means getting stick time in, or deploying CS, then by God you do it.

Or be prepared to watch your town burn down ala Ferguson.

Again, am I the only one who sees the irony that the maker of the vehicle is “Dodge”?

The case for the violation of the rights of those who had a legal permit to assemble builds - the police department in that town needs some federal supervision......

Singer worked with Podesta/0bama/Edwards/Kaine/McAuliffe.

“In the 2008 elections, Signer was foreign policy advisor to the John Edwards for President campaign.[17] He was later senior strategist on the 2008 Congressional campaign of Tom Perriello. Signer was senior policy advisor at the Center for American Progress and later that year worked with John Podesta on President-Elect Barack Obama’s State Department Transition Team.[2]

In 2009, Signer was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, receiving 21% of the vote.[18]

From 2009 to 2013, Signer was an appointee by Governor Tim Kaine to Virginia’s Board of Medicine. He was a member of the finance committee for Terry McAuliffe for governor and later served as chair of Governor-elect McAuliffe’s Transition Council on Homeland Security.[14] Earlier in his career, he was legislative aide to then-Delegate Creigh Deeds.

Signer created an Advisory Council on Innovation and Technology to link stakeholders in the Charlottesville technology sector. Governor Terry McAuliffe appointed him to the Council on Virginia’s Future.[citation needed] During Signer’s tenure as Mayor, Charlottesville was named by Entrepreneur as the #4 City in the U.S. for entrepreneurship.[19]

During Signer’s tenure, the city council created an Open Data policy[20] and required agencies to register voters to vote online...”

“OK Where is the link ?”

Saw it on twitter last night. This is at least a similar one. There’s no one near his car and he had to travel a long way to ram into that crowd.

It does look like that may have spooked him. What would you estimate, 10 to 15 MPH at that point?

He put it in reverse and drove like a pro. But he was caught and arrested.

I’m pretty sure that’s the same video. Possibly better quality.

Considering that both sides came looking for trouble I’m not sure I blame the police for not wanting to wind up in the middle, job or no job.

I do. It’s their job. If they don’t want to do it, let them quit.

It was a community organizing operation... when politically incorrect communist racists collide with politically correct communist racists.

That wasn't a Donald Trump conservative crowd there. That was a union thug crowd calling themselves "right."

Every time some mayor or city council member wants to remove our War Memorials, they are calling their dogs out to riot.
These are elected officials hell bent on bringing mayhem to their cities and telling LEO to stand down.
What is that called????

The police nationwide are on a stand down because of criticism of them shooting innocent people.

A "patriotic American" would say that even a Nazi has the right to free speech and assembly in the USA, and the right to protection if other forces try to stop them.

This is the only sane comment I have read on the topic.

And I mean on FR, Twitter, reddit, and a few other discussion sites I have been scouring.

It's like everyone is afraid to say it. Even though it is one of the cornerstones of our country. If burning the flag is protected speech, then whatever tf the nazis are saying is equally protected.

Yeah it’s probably the same one. Clear street for a block or so. No sign of anyone paying him much attention.

You can see his brake lights lit and hear his tires chirp at the start of the clip- so he was already slowing some- his previous speed was likely what caught the attention of the dude with the cellphone.

There’s another video that shows him backing away from the collision. He drives for several blocks at speed with his front bumper dragging. Impressive driving if you discount what he had just done. Anyway his mad skill at speeding away in reverse sure makes it hard to argue that he had been scared with no option when he ran into the crowd. He was one cool customer.

Is there an estimate of the total crowd size? We talking 300 or 10,000?

If he was scared the completely empty street behind him would have been a good option. Not a single person on the other side of the intersection.

Maybe Virginians should claim it’s too dangerous to pay their taxes.
