A couple of years ago there was a garage sale that was advertised with vintage audio equipment, a hobby of mine. As I was digging through the vinyl the two old codgers throwing the thing were arguing about which amendment ruined the US. One was saying the 19th, I dont remember the other ones opinion. I got a couple of finds and went up to pay. I told them they were both wrong and went into a lengthy explanation about how the 17th made us a democracy and not a republic. They gave me the vinyl, and threw in some electro voice drivers they had 25 bucks on but are worth about 300.

There are some who think that because most state legislatures right now are Republican, that getting rid of the 17th will result in more Republican senators.

What will happen instead is that Democrats will work even harder to make sure that more state legislatures are Democrat in order to guarantee more Democrat senators.

Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it.

It’s long past time to stop calling them Senators.
They are nothing but Congressmen at Large.

I and a number of Freepers her have been calling for repeal of the 17th for a loooong time. Add the 16th and the 19th to that and we may have a framework for reclaiming the Republic.

Does anyone have a good history of the 17th? What was the push behind the change? Was everyone sick of Blagojevich style auctions for Senate seats? Or had the progressive powers decided to end state appointed senators obstructing their big plans?

Restoring true representation to the House of Representatives is vital to the future of the constitution. State election of senators should then provide a limiting effect, a check, on the mob that would be running the House.

Get rid of the 16th Amendment first.

Luckily, Republicans hold power in most of the states, for the time being. If the majority of state legislatures and governorships were controlled by Democrats, I don't think it would be a good idea to repeal the 17th.

Yup. 1913, the year that will go down in infamy as the lynch-pin to the destruction of our republican form of government.

Truly a bad year.

I agree with this assessment of the 17th amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Direct election of Senators was not part of the ‘great compromise’.

Article V ping. Former Cong. Allan West and former Gov. Mike Huckabee have endorsed the Convention of the States movement.

At this point each state needs to vote in their legislative assemblies to call for a Convention of States. Three amendments should be at the forefront.

The first should be to repeal the 17th amendment.

The second should be for term limits.

The third should be to require that in Presidential elections each elector be required to cast their electoral vote for the Presidential Candidate who received the majority of votes in their Congressional District, not in a winner take all statewide count.

I would encourage all to study a little history. The reason the 17th amendment was passed was because of corruption on the state level. We never eliminate corruption, we just move it around.........................
