He's a madman. China's unable to reign him in and the Nork's have been China's puppets for decades now. They built him, 25-30 years of the US ignoring their threats and now our own intelligence agencies (that's a laugh!) are surprised they can fit a nuke on an ICBM?
None of this is going to end well as best I can see. There will be war on the Korean peninsula before this is over. I'm no military expert by any stretch, I just don't see a way around it. NK has to be taken out.

What I do not understand is that Kim has lived in Switzerland. He knows how the rest of the world functions, he knows the power of the US and he still acts this way.

he gets caught up in his on BS, and if he tries to back down then his whole country turns on him. Better to keep going forward than to cower out, I guess.
Aegis BMD or Aegis Ashore is a mid-course interceptor (extra-atmospheric), so the SM-3 can get that high. Guam has a THAAD battery or two, which can also get up to the top of the atmosphere (at Mach 9.5+). Ideally, the systems would operate together, with Aegis launching first and THAAD doing the mop-up if anything got through.

People who think an “EMP weapon” is something special and especially sinister are deluded.
You have to be within a few miles of a nuke explosion for EMP to have serious impact.
