Adding: in NYC a pack a day 40 year habit smoker will pay over $60,000 in tobacco taxes.
None of that money is directed to help lower medical costs.

You have to compare the healthcare cost not at that point in time but their entire lifetime. Their cumulative cost.

I smoke-—other than childbirth I have been hospitalized twice,for a total of only 5 days-——I’m 84.
I certainly don’t know what’s ahead of me but whatever is I am sure the smoking can’t be blamed.

My mother and father in law thoroughly enjoyed smoking too, until lung cancer killed them. And my cousin was smart enough to quit, yet died of lung cancer 15 years later.
I pray that doesn’t happen to you. But please don’t pretend that smoking is harmless.
