Even At A Flagship 'Red State' University, Free Speech Can Be Dangerous For Students
Forbes ^ | July 29, 2017 | George Leef

It’s widely known that college officials don’t much care for free speech by students – at least speech that bothers leftists. We’re always reading about how speech was prevented or punished at schools known for their “progressivism.” But it’s not true that you find policies that limit speech only at such institutions.

You also find them at many colleges in generally conservative “red” states – such as South Carolina. A recent free speech case at the University of South Carolina (USC) shows that college officials anywhere are prone to writing and enforcing rules that make free speech dangerous.

Since launching its Stand Up for Free Speech project in 2014, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) has had a great deal of success in defeating such officials when they interfere with the free speech of students. But you can’t win them all, and the case it fought against USC has so far turned out badly.

Ironically, this free speech case arose when a number of students at USC affiliated with the campus chapters of Young Americans for Liberty and College Libertarians hosted an event in November, 2015 whose very theme was the threats to free speech on American college campuses. And the students played by the university’s rules, obtaining prior approval from USC’s director of campus life for the posters it planned to display to illustrate the problem of censorship with specific cases.

Kind of a weird premise that colleges in red states aren’t known for progressivism.

My guess is that nearly all Colleges and Universities are infected with the lust for tyranny and fascism, made possible through the hiring of professors and faculty who have managed over the years to see to it that any traditional American values, especially Christian values were eliminated along with the professors who believed in this system of government. They have put down deep enough roots now to institute the elimination of free speech, the bulwark of freedom in any nation. They thought they had it all wrapped up until Trump won the election. Now, they have to resort to all that is unconstitutional to keep their progress toward tyranny alive.

At state schools legislators and governors should cut off money for “diversity” activities/classes/ positions. It has become a hot bed of leftist injustice, hate and intolerance.

This is the time to go for it as the public is aware of how toxic these social justice warriors have become on college campuses.

That is a reasonable and moderate solution--but it is just the beginning of what is needed to clean up this mess in aisle three.

How about eliminating all non STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) courses from state schools?

That will save the states big-time cash while flushing many more maggots into the toilet bowl.

I’d take a wild guess and say Bob Jones University is also probably not a bastion of progressivism.

State legislatures could easily both crack down on this nonsense, and do their part to deflate the higher education bubble which is harming students and those states economic futures.

Simply put, identify those majors that do not result in employment in that field of study within six months after graduation, and eliminate state subsidies to them. Further, if students still want those majors, there should be a prohibition against using federal or private loans to take them.

In effect, students will have to pay cash up front, after demonstrating that they have the resources to pay for that major out of pocket, without any student loan.

This would slice a huge chunk of leftist fat from the universities budgets. Along with eliminating the jobs of those academics who teach them, even if tenured.

And it would prevent students from ruining their lives by making themselves perpetual debtors for worthless degrees.

As well as purging entire herds of leftist academicians.

What’s not to like?

I think it’s more likely that those college officials do want free speech, but they are too afraid to stand up for it. Because if you do stand up for free speech on campus, you’ll be branded a hater, and a racist.

And then there could be violence. The left loves violence. (Just don’t call it violence. Call it “righteous rage”, or some such thing.)

So it’s much easier for college officials to give in, and not stand up for free speech for all.

These “students” think they are protected by the Law and the campus environment they have created. This is not new.

I doubt that even 1% of these Social Justice Warriors on campus today would recognize what the name “Kent State” represents. As I remember, violence on campus plummeted after the Kent State incident
