That said, I think Gold State GOP called it when he said these electric cars have a niche as secondary vehicles for urban driving. That will be their anchor and as battery technology improves they will expand from there.
The $7,500 subsidy goes away once Tesla has sold 200,000 cars. I wonder how many of the 500,000 people who have “reserved” their Tesla realize this?

So what if this product fails, or isn’t as nice as your 70 year old Chevy? In America we have the freedom to innovate. Most innovations fail, but ultimately something better comes out of the process. And there have been plenty of other innovations that were assisted by taxpayer dollars, why the extreme vitriol for electric cars? I say the more choices the better.

The EV tax credit is that: a tax credit. It’s not cash handed out. I’m all for lower taxes, and if we can’t get across the board cuts, then I’ll take what we can get. Tesla doesn’t get that $7500, you get a tax break after forking over that cash.
I not against Musk selling cars. I’m against him scamming the government to do it.

Regardless of how the subsidy is structured, both the car buyer and car maker benefit. The buyer has to put out less cash, and the car maker will sell more cars and can charge more for them knowing that Uncle Sugar will pick up part of the tab.
But ultimately, it really doesn’t matter, in the fairly near future, the tax credit/subsidy will be gone.
Electricity Rates will sky rocket when people a trapped by Governments and have to buy Electric Cars

What I can’t wait for is the caterwauling to start once states begin imposing an EV-specific wheel tax because their gasoline tax revenues are drooping.

The Achilles heel of all current electric cars besides range is recharge time. Musk is producing a car with reasonable range, but who wants to spend hours charging it? Imagine you are taking a vacation to the Black Hills of South Dakota in your Tesla. Starting out with a full charge in Sioux Falls you zip west on I-90. It is summer in the northern plains so you need your air conditioning and the long drive is boring so you are enjoying some tunes on the stereo. Both the use of the A/C and sound system drain your battery as well as the 90 degree heat. By the time you reach Wall Drug you need a charge big time. The half a dozen charging stations are currently in use so you wait your turn for hours while others charge up. Now you can expect another 4-6 hours to fill your battery. You end up finding a hotel room in Wall to spend the night while your car recharges. In the meantime others in gasoline powered cars you passed so smugly have fill up and are enjoying the light show at Mt. Rushmore

Yes. When all is said and done, Musk’s true genius lies in separating the smokestacks from his cars and money from taxpayers.

And the sad thing is that Texas will NEVER get a dime of what it saves the federal government by prevent the THEFT of tax dollars by Tesla owners ($7,500 per vehicle...hard to believe).
Hopefully that will change under Trump.
