During the 1980s, I did several deployments to South Korea from Okinawa as a member of Marine units coming into country to train on the extensive range system set up in the area just south of the DMZ.

One feature of the road system were the extensive high earthen walls that interdicted the highways at right angles every couple of miles. There were gaps in the wall to let the highway pass through. Above each of these gaps was a huge block of concrete being held aloft by surprisingly thin side walls. If you looked quickly enough as you drove through, you could see the precast holes for the demolition charges that would be used to drop the concrete block across the road and complete the obstacle system.

Another feature I observed was the lining of all the river banks with huge cast concrete polyhedrons set at a near vertical pitch. While I am sure they had routine use as flood control measures, they would also make it very difficult for any attacker to exit the river bed if they tried to use it as an alternative to the blocked highways.
