Why are you choosing to retire in there?
If you get away from the area around the coast from Kittery to Portland the ‘woods’ of Maine is Republican.
It's near water and relatively pristine, and as far as I can tell won't become a 3rd world nation anytime soon. I have a friend in Montana who says to look around there but I know little about the northwest US. The Virginia peninsula is nice, rural (people there from White, Black and Latino all very friendly), but it seems VA will be blue for a long time from DC expanding.
