And they get the facts wrong - a week ago this afternoon, Trump’s NYT interview was published. But Trump’s attack against Sessions has been sporadic, driven mostly by follow-up press questions. The last time Trump attacked Sessions was yesterday afternoon, which by my account is 6 days, and 6 days is not a week.
Media outlets of all type (radio, TV and print) and ideological stripe are nevertheless unified in their condemnation of Trump’s tweets.
Strip away the bluster and the sneering and the truth becomes obvious: Trump’s tweets completely obviate them.
A tweet takes 20 seconds to send yet the press would have us believe Trump has barricaded himself in an inner sanctum with only his phone for company.
As you say, these statements are brief and intermittent but are portrayed - in a classic case of projection - as a round-the-clock campaign.
Cable news long ago abandoned its remit. The usual fires, floods and earthquakes barely elicit a mention. There can be nothing less illuminating than a gaggle of swamp creatures sat round a table reinforcing groupthink yet that is exactly what is served up.
Imagine the eye-crossing boredom that would quickly result from ESPN et al discussing a Super Bowl that will never be played. That is what the political media, with their Super Bowl 3.5 long years away, have devolved into.
Trump is on a warpath because these enemies that are out to get him are also attacking his family.
The only way to rein them in is to make them pay. Sessions needs to do that. If he cannot, we need someone who will.
With the treachery Trump has had to put up with he knows now that it is war. No more Mr Nice Guy.
