I wonder if the President somehow knew about this and all of the stuff from the last few days was to draw more attention to anything Sessions ends up announcing on this matter...after some Democrats were essentially forced to rally behind him in support (previously, Sessions was a scoundrel) and bolster his credibility.
Because an announcement about something like this is not something that could just be made up on the fly that Sessions is revealing in response to recent comments by the President...something more substantial would have to have been going on for some time behind the scenes, which most legitimate investigations are not being shown in the spotlight as they are ongoing.
As per the norm, Trump forces the adversaries into an extreme position - in this case they were defending and standing up for Sessions....
Then bam.
