Charlie Gard will be allowed to die after his parents today made the heartbreaking decision to let him ‘slip away’.
Chris Gard and Connie Yates arrived at the High Court in tears as they ended a campaign to save his life that has touched millions around the world.
They have battled for six months for their beloved 11-month-old son to be flown to the US for pioneering drugs to treat his rare strain of mitochondrial disease.
But they have now decided to let him die clearly believing that Great Ormond Street’s refusal to let him travel to a New York hospital had cost him his chance.

Not sure of the American health system but in Canada, it is governed by the ‘Canada Health Act’. It species what conditions and criteria the Provincial health insurance programs must meet to receive Federal funding. That said, ‘health care is a Provincial responsibility so coverage is a patchwork across the Provinces, with each Province funding differing things. It is so non standard, that Albertans who do not have private coverage through work, are advised to buy Blue Cross, not just when they leave the country, but when they leave the PROVINCE to visit other parts of Canada.
PS: Under our ‘glorious universal health care system’, why is it that so many wealthy Canadians still go to the States for treatment of their ailments?
