This kind of reminds me when some artists dies, and no one said a single word about him 20 years before his death, but the day after his death he was the greatest person who ever lived and the finest artist of all time.

People tend to follow the rule "thou shall not speak ill of the dead". Worse than some "celebrity" whose been out of the public spotlight for decades being treated as the "greatest artist ever" is when some completely reprehensible public figure dies and is treated as an outstanding public servant.
One of the bigger ironies I remember is my fellow conservatives balking at the fawning coverage of Nelson Mandela, screaming about how biased it was because he was treated "like a saint" and from bios of him on TV, you'd think Mandela was a spotless heroic freedom fighter. Then merely a week later, Ariel Sharon dies (whose legacy had been one of the biggest turncoats and traitors to his country and to the conservatives who supported him), but the coverage from the CONSERVATIVE media was pretty much the same one-sided "saintly" portrait they had just screamed bloody hell about. If you knew nothing about Ariel Sharon except from the description of him the week he died, you'd think Sharon was some George Washington type fearless patriotic figure that was universally beloved his people.
A more local example for me is when Judy Baar Topinka died. She always one of the worst RINOs in Illinois and loathed for backstabbing conservatives, but the coverage from conservatives after her death depicted her as a "GOP icon in Illinois" and a "good government conservative role model"

Agreed. As for people getting brain cancer, its one of the worst ways to go and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemies.
That being said, McCain really ought to retire NOW, and should have done so years ago. I feel terrible about what's happened to him, but I hope his ego isn't letting his desire to stay in the spotlight get above his better judgment. His prime concern now should be spending time with his family and preserving the time he has left.
