We've all heard of ways to reduce our carbon footprint: biking to work, eating less meat, recycling.
But there's another way to help the climate. A recent study from Lund University in Sweden shows that the biggest way to reduce climate change is by having fewer children.
"I knew this was a sensitive topic to bring up," says study co-author Kimberly Nicholas on NPR's Morning Edition. "Certainly it's not my place as a scientist to dictate choices for other people. But I do think it is my place to do the analysis and report it fairly."
The study concludes that four high-impact ways to reduce CO2 gas emissions include having fewer children, living without a car, avoiding airplane travel and eating a vegetarian diet.
By the numbers, any of these lifestyle changes drastically reduce carbon emissions compared to more common practices like recycling, using energy-efficient light bulbs and line-drying clothes.
For some activists, climate change isn't only an intellectual problem. It's a "heart problem," says Josephine Ferorelli, co-founder of Conceivable Future. She spoke with NPR's Jennifer Ludden last year on having kids in the age of climate change last year. That story cited a study from 2010 that came to similar conclusions about the impact of slowing population growth on global carbon emissions.
But what about if potential parents know the science and want to raise their child on a healthy planet? Nicholas remains optimistic.
Nicholas says in her own life, her and her fiancé are deciding if they want to cast that vote of hope for themselves.
"Because we care so much about climate change, it is a factor we're considering. But it's not the only one."

Want to slow down global warming? Fire up more coal plants, refine more crude oil and drop the CAFE standards to 10-15 MPG.
This will cause the exhaust to rise to the atmosphere, blocking out the sun, lowering global warming temperatures.
Why is this so hard for the left to understand? Their problem is they are not calling it what it is, which is air pollution. That takes their entire argument of global warming away. By stopping this the sun shines brighter causing temps to rise.
In reality, the left is causing global warming.

By 2100, Africa will contribute 82% of total growth: 3.2 billion of the overall increase of 3.8 billion people. Under some projections, Nigeria will add more people to the world’s population by 2050 than any other country.There are too many Africans. And it's getting worse. Much worse.
If climate researchers have fewer kids, there will be less financial pressure on them to “adjust” historic temperature measurements to prove global warming.
Start in Africa, Asia and Central America.
Send teams of para-doctors to perform free vasectomies.
Send battalions of them.
Have no children and give us the excuse to bring in millions of Muslims to repopulate ,ya we all know about this scam as well

If it wer not for immigration, we would have zero population growth right now.
I will shake my head and say that they were dumb but at least they actually believed the nonsense they were pushing.

My understanding is that whites are averaging 1-1/2 kids per couple nowadays. Muzzies are doing 8 to 10. So yes, I agree that somebody needs to quit.

I’m okay with snowflakes biking to work, eating less meat, recycling, and having fewer children. It’s easier to outvote the losers and preserve freedom if they self-select out of the gene pool. Throw in President Trump motivating the illegal invaders to self deport, and it’s a big win for America.
Note: All of my kids plan on at least three children each, with most of them thinking far more than that. I raised them well.
