BETRAYAL: Republicans Push Anti-Free Speech Bill Written by Islamic Terror-Linked Groups
Townhall.com ^ | July 18, 2017 | Brigitte Gabriel

Remember the bakers in Oregon who were driven out of business for refusing to bake a cake for a ceremony that was against their principles? They were fined $135,000 under Oregon law.

Now the federal government is going even further, by pushing a bill to erode the First Amendment, which would criminalize opinions deemed as “hate speech.”

Indeed, if House Bill 257 is passed into law, you could be jailed for an opinion that defies political orthodoxy with regards to sharia law, or radical Islam.

The United States already has strict laws that protect against hate crimes, so one reasonably asks, “why do we need a new bill?” What does H.R. 257 add that doesn’t already exist? The answer is frankly shocking.

If this new bill is passed, hate crime would be redefined to include public speech such as arguments that our politically correct culture deems offensive.

There is nothing in this bill that protects your next tweet speaking out against the genital mutilation of children from landing you in federal court. In fact, it is quite the opposite.

This legislation was drafted by terrorist-linked groups, and sponsored by four Republicans (and a predictable laundry list of democrats), to silence Americans speaking openly about the threats we face as a nation. Tragically, the Senate proposal, introduced by far-left Kamala Harris, has already passed.

I just went out to see who the other (3) RINO sponsors might be and read the exact same thing. What passes for journalism or editorials these days is absolute crap. Thanks for posting the summary of this.

YIkes. A more spiritual man might conclude that the devil himself is actually in control of the 115th Congress, with both houses in absolute disarray.

Do you think they were tricked into supporting this, thinking it was the other H.R. 257?

The words “resolution” and “bill” are used so often that it’s hard to determine what has passed, or not, and whether any actual bills, or proposed law, have been introduced and voted on.

It would be nice to see what the bill actually says in its own words, rather than just getting a characterization.

The issue is a “resolution” with a number identical to the “bill”. Both exist. The resolution is the hate speech crap, but it is only a resolution of the sense, not a proposed law.

There is FAR FAR too little of the details of the bills themselves, compared to all the mass of opinions and claims about the bills. Cannot take seriously arguments that are all opinion and little fact. Maybe the facts are there, in the bills, but the article does not demonstrate that.

“Indeed, if House Bill 257 is passed into law, you could be jailed for an opinion that defies political orthodoxy with regards to sharia law, or radical Islam.”

Nah, the Supreme Court would strike it down the first time it got challenged. Congress can’t change the 1st Amendment by passing a bill.

Well, that resolution still doesn’t say what the author of the article is pretending it says, because there is no mention of “hate speech” that I can see, nor does it attempt to make anything at all illegal beyond what is already illegal under state (not federal) laws.

Indeed, if House Bill 257 is passed into law, you could be jailed for an opinion that defies political orthodoxy with regards to sharia law, or radical Islam.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

These two items are clearly in conflict. This Bill 257 may pass but it will not stand. The USSC will have to shoot it down. It is in direct contravention of the 1st amendment.

If it is not taken down by the USSC, then we are truly doomed and the shooting should start 1 second after the gavel falls.

I looked up HR 257 and found this.

It is sponsored by Representative Barbara Comstock of Virginia. It also lacks most of whatever hyperbole Brigitte Gabriel is spouting on Townhall. Also totally different than what you posted.

Criminalization of “Islamophobia” has been a long standing goal of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

Police training has been modified to implement this goal.
