'A very steady hand at the helm': Trump's pick for FBI director could be exactly what agency needs
Business Insider ^ | 07/10/2017 | Eric Tucker and Sadie Gurman, Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The attorney selected to replace James Comey as FBI director is described by those close to him as admirably low-key, yet he'd be taking over the law enforcement agency at a moment that's anything but tranquil.

Christopher Wray would inherit an FBI that lost its popular leader in an unceremonious firing in May and that has spent the past year investigating whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia to win the presidency. During this most consequential investigation in decades, he'd be serving under a president who is said to have demanded loyalty from Comey and has appeared insensitive to the traditionally bright boundary between the White House and the FBI.

Wray's hearing Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee may dive into his legal background but will almost certainly focus on the political maelstrom surrounding the nomination, with Democrats and perhaps some Republicans seeking assurances of his independence from President Donald Trump.

Lawyers and FBI agents who have worked with Wray don't expect that to be a problem, describing him as calm, methodical, and even-handed. He has deep experience in Washington, serving as the top criminal lawyer in the Bush administration Justice Department and working closely not only with Comey but also with Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who is now serving as special counsel in charge of the Russia investigation.

So, will he be confirmed before the next president takes office?

If he’s a good and decent man, he will require fervent daily prayers for his protection. That is a very treacherous part of The Swamp.

comey was a “popular leader”? I guess so. The fbi is corrupt so the corrupt swamp denizens loved him.

That’s what I’m wondering.

From the AP story: "Christopher Wray would inherit an FBI that lost its popular leader in an unceremonious firing in May"

In what alternate universe was Comey "popular"? And leaving aside AP's editorializing about "an unceremonious firing" could one think of an instance when a firing is "ceremonious"?

The Wray nomination was not sent to the Senate until June 26, two weeks ago.

Sen. Grassley’s Judiciary Committee will hold Wray’s confirmation hearing this Wednesday, July 12.

Just more evidence that the media is corrupt and Trump's need to battle the fake news daily totally justified and necessary.

Thanks for posting that.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the timelines for these nomination processes in Washington. Over the last few months I've learned a few important lessons:

1. When the President of the United States announces that he has selected someone to fill a role that requires Senate confirmation, all he has done is make a formal announcement.

2. The person who has been selected for that role doesn't officially become a "nominee" until his or her nomination is given to the Senate. This process can take weeks, or even months -- partly because the nominee has to go through a thorough background check before officially being a "nominee."

3. A candidate for a post will typically face a long period of time between selection and formal nomination if he is very wealthy and/or has extensive business interests that have to be scrutinized closely. Robert Wood Johnson IV, for example -- the heir to the Johnson & Johnson family fortune -- was recently confirmed as U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain, even though President Trump announced his selection all the way back in January.

4. Once a nomination is handed over to the Senate, the Senate usually goes through two parts of a confirmation process -- first in whatever committee oversees the area where the nominee will be working, then in the full Senate.

Yes. I would love to see McCain, Graham and Rubio being boiled alive into a chicken gumbo to feed the other swamp critters they love so much.

I’m not sure anyone else is going to be confirmed. Mitch and his toadies somehow think it’s their job to make Trump acceptable. To hell with that. Do your jobs. Represent IS. Do what you promised

Trump is

I’m not sure RW Johnson has been confirmed. His nomination was sent to the Senate same day as Wray’s.

From https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/07/trumps-fbi-pick-has-troubling-history-digital-liberties

President Bush’s sweeping constellation of warrantless surveillance programs, codenamed STELLARWIND, played a key role in the mythos that surrounded the last two FBI Directors.

Wray was reputedly one of the senior Justice Department officials ready to resign if then-Deputy Attorney General James Comey chose to do so over STELLARWIND’s legality—though Wray himself wasn’t aware of its existence at the time.

Wray has since praised then-FBI Director Bob Mueller’s willingness to challenge President Bush over those surveillance programs, telling WIRED, “I think that the great thing about [people with] strong moral compasses is that they don’t have to hand-wring. When they’re uncomfortable, they know what they have to do.”

"...a president who is said to have demanded loyalty from Comey and has appeared insensitive to the traditionally bright boundary between the White House and the FBI.

President Trump had every right to fire Comey or anyone else who proves to be politically corrupt and Comey surely fits that picture....."the bright boundary between the White House and FBI...."Not under Obama...Lois Lerner got a pass; Loretta Lynch got a pass; Hillary Clinton REALLY got a pass......
