Missiles are replacing aircraft similar to how aircraft replaced battleships. It’s all about putting payload on target.
When a small coastal ship can carry a precision-strike supersonic missile with a 1000lb warhead which uses satellite targeting and GPS guidance that can strike out to 400 miles the defender is far more concerned about the missile than the ship carrying it.
