Given worst case scenarios, there are few worse than losing an engine on take off in a Cessna 310 that I'm guessing was full of fuel.
He almost got it back on the runway, too.
Did the 310 just go through an annual or have some maintenance done?

If this happened at 4:08 pm on Monday through Friday the plane would have crashed into my car. Take that way home everyday.
With only a pilot and one passenger on board it was well under gross weight and would fly most happily with one engine. I suspect one of two things, the engine that was still running was not producing full power or very poor airman ship.

However, my limited understanding of Cessna 310s is that they look much better than they fly, especially with only one engine running. Also, those big tip tanks don't help the handling much, either, but they sure look cool!
So, I think he's probably a decent pilot, as well as being a lucky one.
Whatever his interpretation of his situation might have been in the moment, right or wrong, and crashing is almost always ruled pilot error and likely will be in this case, too, he didn't miss it by much.
Didn’t look like he spun; just a turn, followed by a stall, not much pitch over but clearly stopped flying, sinking flat.
Ergo my thought that he pulled back...right when he shouldn’t have.
Apparently, the pilot’s engine out, skills suck. He should have been able to make it back around.
My guess is he was over weight for the high temperature conditions.

Yuh know...I owned and flew a 310 for 15 years.
Never even got close to something like that.
You keep a 310 high and close in, drop the barn door flaps on short final, point the nose at the numbers and you can grease it on just fine.
If the tower puts you on a long final behind somebody, you just fly it to the fence. Keep the power up (20” MP, 2600 RPM), 30 deg flaps to short final, then dump them to full 45 deg.
Not the best way to fly a VFR approach but safe.
Never had a problem. Home field was a 3800’ strip in an urban area and usually was off on the midfield taxiway.
It’s a great airplane, but you do have to fly it.

Maybe you can clear up something for me. I had heard that among the light twins, compared to the 310, only the Aerostar's fuel system was more demanding.
Regardless, could there have been a mechanical problem with the fuel system that took too much attention/time/altitude to solve and/or did the pilot mis-select pumps or tanks on the ground and then didn't catch his mistake?
Sometimes even a competent pilot gets distracted. I flew with a very competent pilot who, out of habit, grabbed the handle to raise the flaps during the roll out after landing in his brand new Aztec E.
Unfortunately, habit got that one wrong and it was the gear handle he grabbed, not the flaps. Oops...

There's a lot of things it could be. Initial speculation is always wrong.
PS: 310 fuel system isn't hard. Just remember the tip tanks are the mains and the fuel return system pumps fuel back to them, so you need to burn off fuel from those tanks before you try to use the aux (wing) tanks. I always ended up running the aux tanks dry by plan, usually ending up with an engine out for a moment followed by a nice yaw as I switched back to the mains...exciting for anyone with me...!
I figured it could have been like with a lot of airplanes and it might have owned you as much as you owned it.
And if not, well...then I'm even a bit more jealous...but in a good way, of course.
So maybe it's not hard, but I see what you mean about how you have to fly it. And I think it would a serious challenge to catch back up to a 310, especially if you weren't current.
