SAN ANTONIO — A police officer involved in a shootout near San Antonio College Thursday afternoon has died, officials announced Friday morning.

Officer Miguel Moreno, 32, was pronounced dead at 11:11 a.m. Friday at the San Antonio Military Medical Center. He was one of two officers shot in the 200 block of W. Evergreen St. near San Antonio College while approaching two suspects near a car that appeared to have been broken into Thursday afternoon, said SAPD Chief William McManus.

Moreno was with Officer Julio Cavazos, 36, who was shot in the chest and is expected to survive, McManus said Friday.

As the officers exited their vehicle, one of the suspects opened fire on the pair. One suspect was taken into police custody and the other was shot in the head and killed.

"I'm at a loss for words to describe what a tragedy this is," McManus said. "Imagine one of your relatives was shot and killed on the street for apparently no reason."

The suspect who opened fire on the officers around 3:15 p.m. near Evergreen and Howard Streets has only been identified as a man in his late 20s or early 30s from Louisiana. McManus said he was shot once in the buttocks by Cavazos, and once in the head, possibly by himself.

The man arrested in connection with the shooting, who had been walking with the gunman at the time of the shooting, is no longer being considered a suspect. Police plan to consider him as a witness.

"We don't believe [he] had any role in the shooting," McManus said.

This marks the 13th San Antonio police officer killed in the line of duty since 2000.

It'll be no surprise when the name and identity of the killer is released.

We have a large influx of West Coast loony tuners along with drug dealers from south of what we use call the border.

This incident would be unheard of a few years ago. It's the sign of the times unfortunately. We had a population of just over a million twenty five years ago and today we are well over two million.
Needles to say how terrible I feel about the loss of one of our finest. I doubt we will ever really discover the animal's intention or motivation to kill this young cop

It was just last November when a SOB* killed a cop here in San Antonio. Why’d he do it?

Cause he was upset that he had lost a child custody battle and so he lashed out at an authority figure.

Praying for the family of the dead officer, that they can find the strength and courage to face the difficult days ahead.

Actually the picture of one of them in the paper this morning appeared to be white. White trash for sure.

And yes you could have knocked me over with a feather.

It appears that the two first responding officers were shot. Who actually got the perps?

"One suspect was taken into police custody and the other was shot in the head and killed."

Also, did you see this gem (sorry to make light of it)

"McManus said he was shot once in the buttocks by Cavazos, and once in the head, possibly by himself."

I hate when that happens.
