Allison and Michael Busam recently took their three daughters, ages 11, 9 and 7, to a school fair near their home in Summit, N.J., where they found a teacher they knew sitting on the bench in a dunking booth. He was promptly dunked three times.
The soggy teacher told the Busams he was attending his reunion at Summit High School that night. Since moving to Summit from Hoboken 10 years ago, the Busams hear stories like that all the time.
“I know a million people here who grew up here,” Ms. Busam said.
Summit, a city of around 21,000 with a small-town feel in Union County, is a desirable place to live, with prices to match: About a third of the nearly 100 homes on the market are listed for $1 million to $2 million, and bidding wars are commonplace. But people who find their way to Summit, drawn by its highly regarded schools, good access to highways and convenient commute, often stay.

True, man. I couldn’t afford Summit, but who knows? Maybe one day.
Graduated from Summit High School in the early 80s. Made good money (and learned a lot about human nature) caddying at Baltusrol during high school and college. Excellent schools. I wouldn’t trade my youth living in Summit ... at least during those years. Haven’t been back much since then, though. But it certainly wasn’t a hotbed of liberals back then. Maybe that’s changed, too.

My niece and her husband relocated to the NYC area 7 years ago. They decided to buy in Berkeley Heights just north of Summit. Also a nice area, but not so pricey.
The picture of Summit’s main street is lovely and just as I remember it when I visit them in NJ. They also have beautiful churches there. St. Theresa’s Catholic Church is beautiful, and in mid July they celebrate her feast day with an all day affair, parade, dinner, etc., regardless of the day of the week They top it off with a gigantic fireworks event. My relatives never miss it.
Across from St. Theresa’s is a Carmelite cloister and convent where they make beautiful soaps and candles for sale.
My grandparents had a new home there in a beautiful neighborhood. They bought it in hopes my mother would move us there when we were kids. It was an awesome place at the time. Right down the road from Baltusrol country club. I was able to follow Arnie and the Shark around during the U.S. Open. I’m sure the house is over $2 million now.
Noo Joisey? No right to own a gun, no right to carry a gun, and it’s illegal to pump your own gas into your own car? I’d go homeless in the Talladega National Forest before moving to such a hellhole.
Meh. But it is still NJ. One of the least free states!
I grew up in New Providence. It’s not nearly as expensive or exclusive as Summit. A Summit zip code on the east side of NP has cachet, for those who care about such things.
I’m in Mt Olive and sit on the hell that is I-80 every day. Mtn Lakes is no great commute either unless 287 traffic is your cup of tea. NJ in the ‘70s and ‘80’s was a great place to grow up. Small towns, mostly conservative and really great people, contrary to our rep. Today it’s mostly resembling a 3rd world hellhole with Riviera prices. I’m 47 and if i play my cards right I’m out of here in 15 years. Question is where to go. 10 years ago I’d have said back to CO but not now. Really anywhere but here tho.

I go to Summit frequently to have dinner with a buddy of mine and my son has basketball practices at the high school. The best Italian restaurant in NJ, in my opinion is Fiorino’s, in downtown Summit. Great food and they make the best Manhattans I have ever had! I’m getting thirsty just thinking about it. Very liberal city, of course. The only conservative town in Union County is Clark. I think they went 65% for Trump.
Summit is nice but I prefer my hometown of Short Hills
The feast in mid-July is the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, July 16th. The festival and fireworks you are thinking of take place in Berkeley Heights, not Summit.

It is more like down the street than across the street and it is a Dominican monastery.

At the end of the day, "nice place" means the same thing in NY-Timesisch as it does in standard English.
