TOKYO, June 26 (Reuters) - A U.S. warship struck by a container vessel in Japanese waters failed to respond to warning signals or take evasive action before a collision that killed seven of its crew, according to a report of the incident by the Philippine cargo ship's captain.

Multiple U.S. and Japanese investigations are under way into how the guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald and the much larger ACX Crystal container ship collided in clear weather south of Tokyo Bay in the early hours of June 17

Those who died were in their berthing compartments, while the Fitzgerald's commander was injured in his cabin, suggesting that no alarm warning of an imminent collision was sounded.

Looks like the Captain is toast.

You can then include the OOD, the Navigator of the watch, the Boatswains Mate of the watch and the watch standers.

Dereliction of duty, criminal negligence and manslaughter.

I do not understand how this happened, many people on board not paying attention.

It was either:

Sex and dope and dereliction of duty among the crew.

Or

Dope and sex and dereliction of duty among the crew.

From Wikipedia:

"The rating of Boatswain's Mate dates from the American Revolutionary War and was one of the oldest U.S. Navy ratings in continuous existence from 1775 to 2016. For a period of three months at the end of 2016, the rating (along with all ratings in the Navy) was scheduled for elimination, but the proposed change was unpopular with both sailors and Navy veterans and was reversed in December of that year."

I wonder if there's a connection.

Will wait for our news.

My bro always said watch out for ships that are not USA Flagged. They don't believe in rules.

Lower-powered/less maneuverable vessel ALWAYS has the right-of-way.

according to a report of the incident by the Philippine cargo ship's captain

Would it be common practice to consider this an authoritative, unbiased, source of this particular incident?

So the captain of container ship tells his version!!!
So what!
I don’t believe that our military personnel would’ve allowed our destroyer on purpose or otherwise to be struck!
There is such a tight lid on this mystery it was likely an attack using new technology?

Even if they did there was plenty of time for the fitz to get out of the way.

Theres more going on here then they are telling us. That’s for sure. Maybe the fitz was ordered to block this ship and planning on searching it or something and Crystal decided no.

Lower-powered/less maneuverable vessel ALWAYS has the right-of-way.

That is actually not the case.

Sailboats have right of way over powered vessels, just as gliders have right of way over powered aircraft in the pattern.

But all powered vessels observe the rules of the road at sea, no matter what size.

Whose to say the capabilities of another vessel you only see on radar? Do you assume he has less power hence has right of way? Vice-versa?

A mega-horsepower freighter and a fraction of the horsepower ski boat encounter - who has right of way, the under powered but much more nimble ski boat, or the mega-horsepower but can't get out of its own way freighter?

Dictated by the rules of the road (in a legal sense. Common sense says the nimble ski boat stays the hell out out of the way of the freighter that can run it down without notice.).

Are we assuming the container ship captain is telling the truth?

If he is, then he knew the collision was going to happen, AND STILL WAITED A FULL HOUR TO REPORT IT!

Shaking my head. How do 2 very large ships, both equipped with advanced technology that almost guarantees ample warning so that they don’t collide with other large objects in the ocean, end up colliding?
