I was wondering about that too. Probably why they withdrew the story quickly and acting contrite, even apologizing.

Absolutely he can. They did real damage to his reputation because the reality is that the Democrats in a few years will quote the original story as if it were a proven fact.
Also, CNN did this out of malice and with an intent to cause the man harm and that means they’re not immune to a libel lawsuit.
