Unions = communism. They destroy industries by pushing wages above market prices. Unions ought to be banned.

The road is their life? No kidding...And they'd better like it. They have to pay me upwards of half million+ a year to live in a truck. I did that in my younger life before I knew any better.☺

I did not read the article but issues like these are why I, and why all Americans, should demand serious rethink and roll-back of many of the regulations.

CARB (California Air Resources Board) is a regulator with very broad powers. This example of “no trucks built prior to 2015” may seem to some like a good way to reduce emissions, smog and “global warming”. But there is a huge cost and it is implied in the headline. Independent truckers are independent business people. An arbitrary rule by CARB basically either forces them out of business by making their equipment arbitrarily obsolete, or forces them to take on loads of new debt to buy new equipment while also tanking the equity in their existing equipment. Horrible policies.s This kind of regulation - intended or not - is a boon to the larger trucking companies who have the cash flow to finance fleet upgrades. I think it is partly intentional as the bigger freight companies have the lobbyists who can influence the regulation and they know a rule like this is a huge kick in the groin of small business people in the trucking business which reduces competition and raises costs to everyone - manufacturers, truckers, retailers, and consumers are paying for this in the form of higher prices to cover the additional costs imposed by CARB.

This is the very same reason I totally oppose any kind of mandatory carbon exchange program. Such an exchange creates a “currency” in the form of offsets that will end up in the hands of the largest players. The small guy will essentially be paying a tax to the big guy. And such a program is anti-competition because it will put a freeze on any new entrepreneurs and new technology because newcomers will get zero carbon offsets and have to pay greenmail just to invent something that is better than the current standards.

Any business in california that does any kind of processing - chemical, food, cosmetic etc - all have to pay annual fees to CARB for permits to operate their mixing equipment. Hundreds of dollars each year per piece. It is like saying that Subway restaurants would need a permit for the knives they use to slice open bread. It is a necessary component of their business so they have no choice but to pay this fee every year but it is such a regressive tax and again makes it more difficult for new companies to get started.

Yea right, that is why there are so many unions in Communist countries. I don't want to sound harsh but yours is the most unthinking post I've seen in a long, long time.

To the contrary, Communist countries do NOT have the freedom of association. In the U.S., you are free to meet with people, to organize and seek redress.

Where did you go to school? This is basic civics class material. My apology if you are a millennial as I understand they did not teach you the U.S. constitution when you were in school.

I do recommend the U.S. Constitution as very good reading. They might have it as an app for your phone which should make it easier for you.

Exactly right. Unions today unfortunately associated themselves with communism. But the principles of unionism are very American. The freedom of association and the capitalization of labor is what’s at stake.

It has been 30 years since I drove for a living, I drove tankers as that was the best pay available. Trucks today are creme puffs compared to what I drove back then. Freight Drivers today are making about 50 CPM. Tankers making more, paid layovers, family or friend ride along, pets allowed. Not like it use to be. All truck stops have wifi, small fridge and microwave in truck, not bad.

I worked for an outfit that was definitely the latter.

It was only box truck and only every so often. The horrible midwest based electronics recylcing/refurb job was the only thing I could get a few years back in the early wun era.

To give you an idea of the business practices of the time and probably still are, try this one. The following was from the head guy in the presence of witnesses: “just press down puffed caps and mark them fixed”.

I agree with you. It is a soft form of slavery. The US has sadly shown a penchant for slavery more than once. You do get rich off of it.

Most everyone is missing the fact that CA caused this fiasco by arbitrarily banning trucks. Follow the money and you’ll probably figure out why.

I drive now and want absolutely NOTHING to do with unions. Unions suck. They are out for the bigwigs while they screw the membership.

The union movement in the United States was founded almost entirely by communists. Look it up. The plan was for the unions to organize a “proletariat revolution.” They failed, but that has always been the goal of union leaders. Even now, many union leaders are openly members of the Democrat Socialists of America, a hardcore communist organization!

Capitalism is based on the idea that the free market should decide the price of things, including labor. If you support unions, you support a key linchpin of the socialist agenda. Plain and simple.

Btw, to me getting .50 a mile would be painful, especially when your living in tiny truck cell and about half the time you’re sitting still in some weird truck stop....I think I lasted about 5 months doing it when I was just a kid. I found out fast I hated it.

Btw I do love driving, in fact in my other life I’d traveled in many different countries and was a driver for high profile clients. Followed that life by landing a job as a test driver for an engineering firm who were testing modified rotary engines. My job was to drive the sh*t out of them and drive wherever I wanted as long as I drove it hard 300 miles at a time and record fluid/oil temps, rpm, etc...That position only last a several years but it was a great job.

Absolutely—people want illegals to abuse. Classic—the woman with a big house, can’t manage it, doesn’t want to pay a decent wage so she pays an illegal a slave wage. Laura Bush comes to mind.

Most slaves are happy enough slaving.... Few crave freedom

It's just that they can't conceive of freedom. They are by no means happy, they just don't see an "out".

While I do make comments to speak out against unfair workplace tactics, I also want to say that the worker should be aware of the things people like this can do, and limit their exposure to loss.

This guy getting to the point that he was $78k in, and no chance of getting it back, was a very dumb thing to do.

I realize he was in a compromising situation, but there are attorneys out there who specialize in illegal alien rights. Don’t think they don’t know it. They do.

We are hearing this guy’s story, but it’s a little too one sided for me to go all in on it.

I’d at least like to hear the other person’s story.

I did not read all of this, and perhaps all is explained and I’m being too cautious.

I find it very hard to believe a guy would plop down that sum of money over time, without protecting himself in come way.

Not saying it couldn’t happen. It just causes me to be curious.
