IS destroys Mosul mosque where Baghdadi declared 'caliphate'

Iraq's prime minister, Haider al-Abadi, called the destruction of the mosque an "official declaration of defeat" by IS. ...The explosions happened as Iraq's elite Counter Terrorism Service units, which have been battling their way through Mosul's Old City, got within 50 metres of the mosque, the statement said. ...Al-Baghdadi proclaimed himself "caliph," or ruler of all Muslims, from the pulpit of the mosque on 4 July 2014, after the group's fighters overran parts of Iraq and Syria.

You can see video of this historic mosque (almost 900 years old - one of the world's oldest) being demolished at the link. It is not yet known if the human shields were still packed in there, or even if some ISIS jihadis may have stayed inside to meet their maker, like the crazy cult that they are. The mosque was purposely demolished (as you can see in the video) on a very auspicious day during Ramadan.

Ramadan is over this Saturday evening, and the biggest holiday of the muslim year, Eid al Fitr, will run Sunday thru Tuesday. A particularly big push is on to mop up the remaining ISIS holed up in a few square kilometers in the Old Town of Mosul. Probably just a matter of 200-300 left - probably only days.

In Syria, ISIS in Raqqa is now totally cut off by a tight cordon - the SDF have secured the South side of the river. Fighting is pretty intense there, and the US has been going in heavy with airstrikes and artillery in support of the SDF, who continue to make good progress.

Do you remember when Baghdadi made his big "Calling this a Caliphate" Speech? Well that is the site that that ISIS just demolished, like going down in the Alamo.

Islam is all rage and symbolism. To be destroyed on EID symbolizes that the mosque was apostate, likewise loosing their Caliphate on EID symbolizes ISIS as seen as unworthy by allah. Insulallah, it is allahs will.

ISIS is destroying a site dedicated to the declaration of the caliphate? That seems self defeating. I guess I need to study the players more closely. Or maybe the supporters of the mosque were ‘not Muslim enough’ to suit ISIS. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

One has to wonder what kinds of drugs must the majority of ISIS members be on in order to behave like some wild beast out of that bizarre painting by Hieronymus Bosch. The name off the piece is called “The Garden of Earthly Delights”.
