The Carrier plant in Indianapolis that President Trump convinced to stay open late last year will lay off more than 600 employees beginning next month, according to a new report Thursday.
CNBC reported that the deal struck by Trump before he assumed office isnt working out as expected, and more than 600 employees will soon face layoffs.
Trump and Carrier reached an agreement in December to keep about 1,000 jobs at the Indiana plant. Both Carrier and Trump celebrated the agreement on Twitter
Trump also celebrated the agreement at the plant shortly after it was reached as an early victory of his agenda.
I want to let all the other companies now that we are going to do great things for business. Theres no reason for them to leave anymore, Trump said in December. Their taxes are going to be at the low end and the unnecessary regulations are going to be gone. But CNBC reported that the fine print of the agreement indicates that only 730 of the 1,069 jobs that Trumps deal saved are manufacturing jobs. The rest are engineering and technical jobs that were never set to be cut, according to the report.

Oh my. Maybe they just want to move to Mexico after all?
It’s because Carrier sales died a sudden death over a year ago.
Too big to fail.. unwinning. And burned how many taxpayer dollars.
uh. this is according to the hill.
i will wait for the real story instead of trump bashing fake news.
From, ‘The Hill?’ I’ll await further information...
The only way to interpret this is that global warming as ceased.
I agree- I always wait now because all they have to do is change or leave out one detail- like maybe they are keeping 1000 and laying off 600- I wait until I hear it from Trump or his peeps...
Laying off isn’t moving to Mexico and taking all the jobs out of the country. If business picks back up, then people can be hired again.
So Trump saved 400 jobs.
Layoffs are coming. They are starting to show up all over the place.
There will be pocket problems like this while the economy does take off. You can’t stop everything bad from happening. Sales go South, what else is there to do?
I give Trump kudos for trying, and I give Carrier for giving it a shot as well. It stuck it’s neck out here.
It it’s moving overseas, I’m not sure that will increase sales.
Good luck with that.
Preach it, brother. Americans trading with other Americans makes us all prosperous.
That may be true, but as of May 2017, there has been an increase of 601,000 jobs in the United States. (private sector)
7,000 government jobs have been lost.
So far, that fits in pretty nicely with what I want to see happen.
Not a peep about this on the 2 Indy news sites I visit. This would be a HUGE story for the local #neverTrump media.
Only thing even close, was that Carrier supplier Rexnord, who wouldn’t cut a deal with Trump, is postponing shutting the plant down until September.
Nope, if you read the article it’s because they are automating some of the jobs. Of course most of the jobs will still be there, an wouldn’t be if they had moved.
My guess is that market forces are at work here. Carrier isn’t the HVAC leader that they used to be. My HVAC guy uses Rheem equipment for residential use because it is the best that he can currently get. He got away from Carrier and Trane because of quality issues that he got stuck with. He has been in the HVAC business for over 40 years so I listen to him.
Employment is a lagging indicator.
This is why we need import tariffs. A tariff is the invisible hand that always works and requires no vigilance. CEOs are globalists and do not have America’s best interest at heart. Not a bad thing or a good thing but regardless this needs to be countered with some good old fashioned tariffs.
