That is a very poignant song. John Fogarty said it expresses his hurt over his father divorcing his mother and leaving the family.
Having been a young teenager when my parents divorced, I can sympathize with Fogarty. There are emotions and hurts that remain from that experience that I'll never communicate with anyone. Some scars never completely heal.
