Karen Handel Is Keeping Donald Trump At Arm’s Length In Georgia's 6th District
Buzzfeed ^ | June 17, 2017 | Henry J. Gomez

You could count on one hand the red “Make America Great Again” baseball caps in the crowd here Saturday at a get-out-the-vote rally for Karen Handel, who is in danger of being the first Republican since the 1970s to lose in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District.

At least two of the hats sat atop the heads of voters from the nearby 14th District. And that summed up rather neatly the struggle Handel and her GOP allies face.

They need to keep Donald Trump close. Just not too close. The president beat Hillary Clinton by only 1.5 points last fall in the suburban Atlanta district. Polls suggest Tuesday’s special election — to fill the House vacancy left by Tom Price, whom Trump picked to be Health and Human Services secretary — is a coin flip.

Many Republicans fear the contest in its final days is trending toward Democrat Jon Ossoff, who has raised far more money in what’s already the most expensive congressional race in history. Results will be parsed as a barometer for both parties nationally as they realign in the Trump era.

Handel has offered Trump an awkward and politically cautious embrace. He headlined a private fundraiser for her in April, though he already had been scheduled to come to town for a National Rifle Association event.

That “checked the box,” Chip Lake, a Republican consultant in Georgia, told BuzzFeed News. Handel accepted an assist from the White House, but she didn’t have to do it in front of TV cameras or the kind of raucous rally crowd that Trump draws. (More recently, Vice President Mike Pence came to the district for a low-key fundraiser with Handel.)

“I think she’s handled it very well,” Lake said. “It’d be a tricky situation for anyone.”

Cobb county (which is normally dark red) actually went for Hillary in the last election. And, it was due to the never-trump fever.

A lot of solid Cobb Republicans voted for Hillary, because they succumbed to the fear mongering of the never-trumpers. That’s one reason the Democrats think they can take this seat—Cobb’s flip to blue in the presidential election.

That’s why Handle hasn’t had Trump in.

The Democrat/Biased Medias like “Buzz-Feed” is in full panic mode, frightened, that after all the 40 million plus dollars they spent on this special election to get the Obama/Clinton/Democrat/Media, Obama man servant, Jon “Pajama Boy” Ossoff elected over Republican, Karen Handel, Ossoff will be beaten handily (6-9) points by Republican, Karen Handel. Come Tuesday we shall all see the results!!!

Folks, The entire liberal media and Democrat Party are giving you all the “fake news” treatment!!! Do not fall for it. Get out and cast your vote for Republican Karen Handel. This is a national election. Ossoff is nothing but a zero candidate being used as a ploy to bring down Donald Trump & the Republican Party. If Ossoff loses this election to Karen Handel...the Democrat Party is headed for political destruction in total, come the mid-term elections of 2018. Support and vote for Karen Handel!!! Go Handel, Go Trump...MAGA!!!

The current AJC poll has it as a toss up. In the 6th Dist that means the Republican wins.

If true a big mistake on her part. Jerkoff is the worst sort of liberal. He was an aid to Hank (Guam tipping over) Johnson, and you don't work for someone whose ideas you disagree with. Jerkoff is lying through his teeth about his agenda, claims to be a fiscal conservative when he is owned outright by big liberal donors from California NY and MA.

Handel is very much GOPe - the only good thing about her is that she's better than a Democrat. She's anti-gun - was a big shot in the very anti-gun Chamber of Commerce here in GA for years. Its a choice between bad (Handel) and really despicably revoltingly vile (Jerkoff). I don't live in the 6th, so unlike a Democrat who doesn't live in the district I can't vote in this election.

Those that did that or would not endorse President Trump in the General Election, are on the ash heap of ex-office holders! She better get her mind right!

I used to live and vote in the 6th, but got gerrymandered out. My neighbors (rural) are very conservative. The new 6th is nowhere near as conservative as it used to be.

Handel has nothing to offer other than her party registration.

I’m in this district. Ossoff has been saturating all media 24x7 with dishonest portrayal of who he really is. Handel campaign didn’t start fighting back until a few weeks ago. Ossoff had already managed to define himself and Handel. It feels like Handel is always on defense. She isn’t a very charismatic candidate and comes across as weak.

On the brightside, i’m hearing everywhere that Ossoff has so saturated media with ads that it is backfiring on him. You can really only take so much of his smug face and it’s on tv every commercial. My son tells me his libereal college friends hate the guy for all his commercials on Utube. Priorities lol

Is the Ossof candidacy typical lefty media wishcasting or is Handel actually in a position to lose?

This district has been invaded by a LOT of liberal yankee carpetbaggers, but the problem is I don't think Handel is all that popular. Also, AssOff has far outspent her. EVERY commercial break includes one or MORE of his ads.

Yep. Trump won because he was organic and anti-establishment - turning out voters who don’t usually vote and even Democrats. The anger at Republicans is because they are failing to support the President and get their agenda done. The Democrats always stick together, but the Republicans fail to. The lack of Trump hats at her rally was sadly telling.

I suspect there’s been a huge demographic shift in this district over the years. Osoff will get the non-white votes.

Maybe Handel is doing what she needs to do to win & winning District 6 is in Trump’s interest but this article makes me sorry I sent her $. If she wins it will be a victory for Trump but it is very disheartening MAGA

She is a hard core, big gov’t RINO. Ossoff will be a one termer, better than getting Handel in for term after term.

You are correct. The Georgia GOPe made no effort to groom a decent candidate and the result was that Handel just was a survivor from the herd of 17 that were running. If he wins, come Nov 2018, AssOff is history.

DJT has done a number of remarkable things but the biggest could be the split of the progressives from the Ds and the populists from the Rs. We're now seeing the formation of four political parties; the Ds, Rs, progs and populists.

To her own detriment. In that case, I hope she loses.

What does Georgis’s 6th District not like? Tax Reform? ObamaCare? Enforcing Immigration Law? The Request for Proposal for building the wall? If she supports this then she supports Trump.

There has been lots of new high density rental housing completed and rented out in the last several years in the 6th. These renters overwhelmingly vote Dem. Same thing has already happened in Henry county, once a very rec county, now blue.

As she’s apparently another democrat, what difference does it make if she wins or loses?

It is absolutely critical that Ossoff lose.

I am as certain as a nobody like me could that even President Trump would want her to keep him at arms length, as this is the right strategy to get to victory.

At least she is not among those Republicans who are attacking Trump outright.

Turnout is going so high in this election that the polls are meaningless. The question is not who wants D versus R. The question is who raises motivations to the point that everyone gets the heck to the polls.

I am not one to simply write off the pollsters. But I predict that Handel wins by 4% or more. In the end, not close, and for the simple reason that the Republicans who make up the vast majority of this district will get out and vote.

If Ossoff were going to win on a GOTV strategy, the time to do so would have been the primary. That was his one best chance. That he did not get 50% then tells me that he is not likely to get 50% now.

One thing I really hate is a GOPe politician polluting the conservative party. Id rather have a socialist democrat who hates the constitution, than a phoney liar who pretends to love it, but also hates it. Screw them, put a dem in there until they can primary a real conservative.
