Mr. Comey’s fevered gavotte of faux-integrity, his energetic denials of his own bias (he should have resigned on multiple occasions) was indeed part of the shield behind which the shenanigans were engaged in. It certainly did concerning the IRS scandal. It worked fairly well, probably, because it was in accord with the wishes of Attorney General Lynch and tolerated, at best, if not encouraged, by President Obama.
But now the jig is up.

Slowly but surely, the jig is up. Fake news has gone mainstream. FBI is discredited, laughed at. NSA, CIA? losers.

What if....? Let your mind run wild. When Mueller was intro’d recently, he was hailed as a straight arrow, no nonsense mensch. Suppose he intends to root out corruption. What if he’s buddying up to Comey just to get him to spill the beans, etc. He could go down in history as a great man.

What if....Part Deux: Rumor has it that Comey is considered a despised lowlife snake by many FBI Agents. Rumored that when Comey did his TV pardon of PIAPS last July, FBI Agents threw their sandwiches at the TV. Just suppose Mueller agreed with those agents; regarding Comey, Hillary AND Lynch, et al? Fecal matter; meet ventilating equipment!
