Turkey has literally become a party-state after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan returned to the party as its leader in a party congress on Sunday.
He added the title of party leadership to his staggering presidential status, solidifying his already omnipresent mark on every layer of the party with the new move, making a de facto situation a de jure reality.
He even did not wait for 2019 when the constitutional amendment approved by a popular vote last month takes effect, allowing the president also to retain party leadership.
In the presence of a loyal constituency of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) during a congress in Ankara, President Erdogan introduced a massive overhaul in the party’s top cadres, parting ways with AKP bigwigs who had long shaped the party policies over the past decade.
A new, young and aspirant generation of politicians, avowedly loyal to the Chief — a nickname given to President Erdogan — will be in the frontlines and senior positions. The reshuffle speaks to the volume of Mr. Erdogan’s ever-tightening grip over the party, eliminates any would-be figure of substance and personality.

Erdogan said: Unstable and incoherent coalition governments of the past, he repeatedly argued, doomed Turkey into financial disaster, political turmoil and social disorder.
But his detractors and discontents disagree. The new system will not heal Turkey’s woes and misgivings, as the post-coup emergency rule showed; too much centralization of power at one center only aggravated hardships, not resolved them.

My question? Where do all dictatorships end up? Not good prospects for Turkey and the Middle East neighbors.

My BIL, now a proud American citizen, jates Erdogan with a passion! So do his friends.
My guess is this will look a lot like the Mubarak government in Egypt, with some extra Islamic fundamentalism, mostly for show. Expanding corruption will be the trend with Erdogan family and associates lining their pockets. The eventual downfall of the Erdogan regime will hopefully come from the secularists. I figure 8-10 years and a really bad economy will be required.
NATO needs to vote Turkey out.
Erdogan is angling to re-introduce the Ottoman Empire, installing a Caliphate as soon as it is politically feasible. He has been burning bridges to the West in a number of ways, one by holding much of Europe hostage to his plan of extending the rule of Islam and Sharia law to those parts of Europe that have admitted large numbers of “refugees”, including ISIS veterans, funneled in and out through Turkey, and another by making demands on the US to stop supporting the Kurds in the fight against ISIS, as well as returning the exiled leader in opposition to Erdogan.

Erdogan organized a purge of all the known and discernible members of this opposition in 2016, and there were imprisonments and executions in the wake of this purge, of all those who did not manage to escape the hands of the Erdogan thugs. These handpicked enforcers have even exercised their extralegal authority here in the US, with the response of the embassy picketing by Turkish nationals while Erdogan was visiting the US recently.
Can’t think of many good and virtuous things that Erdogan is part of, in the Middle East or elsewhere. A tyrant is a tyrant, wherever he may be. In this instance, probably far worse than even Bashar al-Assad, and definitely in the same league as the former Maximum Leader of Iraq, Saddam Hussein. We all know how THAT ended.
He’s going to make a deal with germany. We’ll have a merger of the Fourth Reich and muslims. Immigrants flood into Europe, nazis start another war. Beware Israel, neither germany nor turkey are finished with you.

Mubarek? Look, Mubarek resisted the Muslim Brotherhood temporary takeover in Egypt in 2012, which was vanquished by the Couch Party Movement in 2013. The Brotherhood came into power in Egypt partly because of a rigged election backed by Obama and Hillary Clinton. There are only maybe 900,000 Brotherhood in Egypt out of a country of 90 million but somehow the Brotherhood got elected. Erdogan, another Muslim Brotherhood member, didn’t want to be thrown out of power the way Brotherhood President Mohammed Morsi was in Egypt. So he started purging his government of all non-Brotherhood civil servants. So you’ve got it entirely backwards and you have been drinking the Progressive Kool-Aid that Mubarek was a tyrant like Erdogan. Mubarek was an authoritarian out of political necessity to suppress the terrorist Brotherhood and constant subversive actions by the Palestinians. The Egyptians removed Brotherhood President Morsi from power not by a military coup but by the rule of law, involving the Egyptian Supreme Court, the military, moderate Islamic and Coptic Christian leaders and many academics and influential media persons. Erdogan saw the handwriting on the wall and didn’t want the same to happen to him. The forerunner of Trump and Brexit was the Egyptian Couch Party Movement in Egypt, both of which were movements to reverse Globalism (socialism). Quit reading liberal media and historians.
Mubarak was a good man, Erdogan is the closest thing Europe has had to Hitler since the end of WWII.
I expect the same with Erdogan. Consolidating and holding power by beating his opponents to the punch. He is already on the road to extravagance, with his new $615m palace.
