The Conservatives will follow Andrew Scheer into the 2019 election, after the young Saskatchewan MP won an upset victory at the partys leadership convention in Toronto Saturday night.
Scheer, who turned 38 on May 20, edged out front-runner Maxime Bernier by less than two percentage points on the 13th and final ballot Saturday night, finishing with just under 50.95 per cent of the vote.
The room at the Toronto Congress Centre erupted in a shocked cheer as party officials read out the final count, with confetti and blue and white balloons falling onto the crowd.
What a campaign this has been, Scheer said as he acknowledged and thanked Bernier and his other leadership rivals for their efforts and hard work.
We have all grown because of your hard work . . . you have each brought your passion and what you believe in to the centre stage, and I plan to ensure the very best of those ideas are brought forward . . . to help us win in 2019.
The victory was a major upset for Scheer. According to polls, pundits and many Conservative strategists at the Toronto Congress Centre, the race appeared to be locked up for Bernier, the 54-year old Quebec MP from the Beauce who wanted to push the party toward libertarian policies.

The Conservatives in Canada had their leadership election.
In a VERY close final ballot Former House of Commons Speaker (like in the UK a non-partisan role but unlike in the UK they remaining members of their party while serving) Andrew Scheer of Saskatchewan defeated the frontrunner, former Cabinet Minister Maxime Bernier of Quebec.
Scheer is described as “Harper 2.0” “Harper with a smile” a “Consensus Builder” stuff like that. He’s a social conservative but not expected to do anything about it. Social conservatives are taking credit/getting blamed for his victory, though he was not their first choice.
Bernier is described as a libertarian, not socially conservative but his economic agenda sounded very good to me.
Bernier proposed getting rid of fascist price controls on milk and stuff, this POed dairy farmer and he actually (and embarrassingly) narrowly lost his own (diary heavy) district to Scheer, who said he’ll keep them.
A “Social Conservative” who won’t “do anything about it” is a left-winger. That’s like the longtime bull$hit position of Democrats who would say to their constituents, “I’m personally pro-life, BUT...” If this guy won’t even end something as simple as dairy price controls, he’s not a “Fiscal Conservative”, either.
Squishes: less than useless.
Sounds like a great candidate. That kind of squishiness plays well in Canadian politics.
Canada is over. The west separates, or joins the US. There are no other options left.
At this point, if the guy has the ability to get damp while taking a shower, he is a shade better than what they currently have running the place.
The west will never join the U.S. They’re smart enough to know that living under the totalitarian rule of Washington is a thousand times worse than living under the totalitarian rule of Ottawa.
His youth was a big factor, I suspect.
The “Conservatives” in Canada need their own version of Justin Trudeau.
That so-called position (against abortion personally but won’t deny others their “choice” to murder their babies) always makes me think how the left would throw fits if anyone took that “stance” on slavery-”I wouldn’t own a slave but if others want to it’s their choice”. Sitting on the fence is not a “stance”, it’s the position you’re in right before you fall one way or the other.
I would think the “Conservatives” in Canada would prefer someone competent and intelligent instead.
Alberta just might, I’ve talked to thousands about it.
Each had pros and cons, but you’d get a currency, a far cheaper cost of living. You would get larger market and work area, and free speech and carry our guns.
Yes you’d inherit the garbage too, but we already have a lot of the same garbage. The leftist universities, crap media etc.
That would be easier than starting from scratch.
Canada doesn’t have a conservative party, they are still a bunch of socialists.
Of course, that’s when Dems attempted to fool the public with the veneer of “moderation.” If they even used that language today, they’d never get out of a primary, even if their voting record was 100% pro-infanticide. The rhetoric and record on that issue must line up.
I always thought it would be fun to run as a Republican on the platform of being “militantly pro-abortion” personally, but I could never force my position on anyone and would have to vote 100% pro-life. Watch the nutters heads explode on the left.
Just like our Republicans.
Yes, exactly. You do have your rights guaranteed though which is good. They may be under attack, but in this country most have given up.
“Bernier proposed getting rid of fascist price controls on milk and stuff, this POed dairy farmer and he actually (and embarrassingly) narrowly lost his own (diary heavy) district to Scheer, who said hell keep them.”
So Bernier’s district is full of people who keep private journals where they record their innermost thoughts on a daily basis? : )
Eh?
That is so true.
The main question is can this guy win against Trudeau in a few years. He will get that time to hone his leadership skills before he goes into battle during an election.
