SSN has always been required for dependents and the child care tax credit. I got it when my kids were little.

I was going to say the same thing... I sure thought it was a requirement when I was claiming it years ago... For some reason, I was under the impression we did not even get out of the hospital without filling out the form to start birth certificate and get a social security # for them.

It has not been required for non citizen children of illegal aliens. Claiming the credit for 10 + living in Mexico is not unusual

The fed-gov allows persons (i.e. illegals) to use ITIN numbers and also claim various tax credits like the EITC and the ChildCare credits.

Requiring an actual SSN for filer to claim those credits will kick them off those programs.

This is all an exercise is shifting the blame. SS numbers have always been required on the tax forms for both these credits. Can’t get the credit unless you fill out the form with ss numbers. Anyone not providing the number would have the form returned. Unless they are criminals and the IRS lets them skate. Just like the IRS sending thousands of refunds to the same address in some shithole in Africa. Then they claim they were scammed out of $Millions. BS. What normal thinking person(s) would send any money to a non US Citizen without checking the bona fides?

You are right that SSNs have been required for years...for citizens.

The IRS has been issuing different numbers to illegals so they can use them to qualify without SSNs for them or their children. Illegals have even been able to claim children living in Mexico- that may not even exist.

In many cases illegals have used other people’s SSNs to file for tax credits as well. The IRS has been choosing to ignore Social Security when they tell them a number does not match.
