New NATO Headquarters Cost $1.23 Billion

President Trump departed from prepared remarks Thursday to comment on the ostentatious new NATO headquarters in Brussels at a dedication ceremony with world leaders.

"I never asked once what the new NATO headquarters cost," Trump said, bringing attention to the glass structure. "I refuse to do that, but it is beautiful."

In fact, the building cost an astounding $1.23 billion, according to a budget released by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The alliance bragged that the structure is also a "green building for the future."

"The environment and sustainability have played a major role in the design process. The new building’s energy consumption has been optimized through the use of geothermal and solar energy and advanced lighting systems. Thermal insulation, thermal inertia and solar protection have been incorporated in the design to reduce heating. Rainwater will be used for non-potable water use and the buildings short wings will have green roofs," the document states.

In his remarks Thursday, Trump took NATO member states to task for not paying their fair share.

"Twenty-three of the 28 member nations are still not paying what they should be paying and what they're supposed to be paying for their defense," Trump told leaders of the alliance countries.

Trump said NATO would be "stronger" in fighting terrorism if member states paid their obligations.

What, exactly, does this palace do to increase security for the member nations?

Sadam, Lennon, Mussolini, and Hitler were big on fancy palaces, too.

One plane, a la Pentagon would shred every occupant and probably any individual within a half mile radius.

Just more objective evidence that European countries have been allowed to essentially “use” the American taxpayers largesse to fund their socialist governments. Europe continues to say “f-ck you” to America.

I’m all for efficient self-sufficient buildings - but must be done in earnest, not just “hey look we’re green” BS. I’m more interested in that building having survivability: contrast the damage by an airliner hitting the Pentagon (multiple walls breached? no serious active defenses? and that was just an aluminum bag of jet fuel). It’s a military center, not an environmental showcase; solar & rainwater should be a matter of grid-down survival.

I’m not sure whether to be outraged that they spent so much (better have serious survivability) or so little (Apple spent $5B on new headquarters just to make flat computers).

The NATO burden sharing issue has been a problem for about five decades. If they haven’t ponied up by now, they never will. Like liberals everywhere, they just want a free ride on someone else’s dime.

So, get us out. Don't send them another dime. Don't send them any more support whatsoever.

Like bureaucrats everywhere, the NATO deadbeats will ride out the Trump era without ever paying their fair share.

I wonder what percentage of this fancy building we paid for?

Saving EUrope appears to have been a waste of time as well.

The latest brewing controversy is all the smug arses smirking and goofing off behind Trump while he spoke..

Why did we save EUrope? Ask the EUroKids in power.

They may eventually get a clue.. but dont count on it.

The smug in power will make sure EUrope becomes EUrabia..

as they smirk and their heads roll..

We must have footed the lion’s share of the bill and he was further rubbing their noses in it as he continues to point out that we are also paying the lion’s share to protect a lot of deadbeats....
